My 4 year old Sidewinder finally took a dump so I picked up this 3D Pro.

When I move the stick either all the way UP or all the way DOWN there is, what I can only describe as, a 'click'.
It doesn't happen left or right or diagonally. Not just a sound but I can feel it. It's quite distracting so I'm asking anyone with the stick to please let me know if this is normal for this stick.

Besides this distraction, I'm really liking this stick.

If this is the stick you are talking about, I feel sorry for you.

Yes, I have this stick.  No I don't have the problem you are talking about, but I suspect that given time you will have the same problem as me, and many, many others.  The stick loses calibration and cannot be fixed; it isn't a driver issue.  When flying the calibration problem causes the plane (or whatever you are flying) to roll to one side.  It can be left or right, I've seen both reported; mine rolls right.

After a period of time the roll problem can become so severe that, in my case with the roll right, I have to hold the stick all the way to the left to keep a plane level, making a left roll impossible.

I've used it for months with no problem. No clicking sound either.

I got one and had no problems with it at all after about 4-5 months of play. I did however have the older model (which was much more expensive) and that fucked up big after a couple of years, same problem as agent_dung_bomb describes hopefully this one wont go the same way, perhaps though I should have learnt my lesson and not bought another logitech joystick...

Mine worked flawlessly for about 8-10 months before it started this.  My stick had this problem, a co-worker and LAN party buddy had the same stick that developed the same problem, sever members of a hardware forum where I moderate have had the problem, and there are countless posts on Logitech's own forums about this problem.

Maybe they eventually fixed the problem, but didn't announce it to avoid legal issues and possibly having to replace all the defective units...I just don't know.  However, without any confirmation of a fix, I always recommend that people stay the hell away from that joystick.  In fact, if you read the Newegg reviews in that link I posted, as late as March 2006 people are still reporting the calibration problems. If some one needs an inexpensive, all around functional joystick, I recommend this one.

My co-worker/LAN party buddy got this one and hasn't had any problems with it.  I'm going to continue to use my Sidewinder until it dies, but if I had to replace it, that Cyborg Evo would be my pick.

I have exactly this joy stick and all I do is WHEN I have the rolling problem I go into the windows control panel and then game controllers and it lists the Extreme 3D Pro.  Then click on properties then settings and there you can calibrate it.  I can calibrate mine for throttle, twist, and left right up and down. After this it works great and I have no problems for the evening of gaming.  The clicking you brought up is not suppose to be there.  Take it back and exchange it.  Should be pretty smooth.

Right, but then the problem comes back and you have to do it again.  You should not have to do that at all.  I calibrated my Sidewinder once, and have never had to do it again, and that's the way it should be with a properly functioning stick.

Hmmm.  I have that joystick as well.  I've had it for over a year, and luckily I haven't had either of the problems listed here.  I don't use mine a lot, though, so that may be why.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago, and now you mention it, mine does the same. Feels like the spring mechanism but only noticeable when going up/down. Maybe they've changed something recently and it only affects new josticks ?

Anyone else bought one recently ?

Sounds like if its still new, get a replacement. I have had the 3D Extreme for over a year, and still no problems.  I have heard about the calibration problem, but I think it has a lot to do with how people actually move the joystick.

My tip: keep it on a level hard surface, not on your lap. You will also get much better feedback for what ever game you are playing.

Update: So I went back to the store I bought the stick from and replaced it. I would have picked up a different stick but they (Best Buy) only had 3 to choose from, the 3d Pro, the Attack 3, and the Saitek x52. The x52 is too much cash for how little I actually fly and the Attack 3 just has a really cheap/crappy vibe to it.
Anyway, the replacement has a similar 'click' but it is much less pronounced.
After the horror stories I've read about the stick though (here and google'ing) I will most likely return it after a few weeks and pick up that Evo. Shame too because I really like the feel of this stick.
Thanks for the help guys.

Like I said, I calibrate mine on the nights I am planning on flying.  I have my own server, so I know what maps are going to be played.  I also go back and play BFDC from time to time and fly alot on there.  So when I am planning on flying, I calibrate prior and then I am good to go for the evening or more.  I think it is no big deal considering the thing cost me $30.00.  I love the feel and the way it works.  For the cash, imo, it can't be beat.  No if performance is what you want then nothing better than the Saitek.  Real feel and so forth, but much more costly.  It is the gamer's choice and how much they plan on flying.  They do have a wireless version of the 3D Pro but not sure how well it stays calibrated.

I use the 3D pro with no problems and no recalibrations. You should replace yours if it clicks or needs to be recalibrated often.

My friend uses the wireless version and has had to replace it twice in the past 6 months. Stick with the wire on this one.

i have no problem with it, only when I leave it ' centred ' and it veers to the left a bit on the rudder. But I can live with it.

Well, mine had a strange bumb in the x,y-as so it needs to go back. I mailed Logitech about it and they said there should be no friction in the x,y-as.

I cant say more about it cause I have not much fly experience with it.

So, this reply also goes with some small info/hint. When you get the change to test the joystick before you buy it make sure it has no friction, or say bump, in the x,y-as.

Same.

Anyone having calibration probs, there is a program that completely resets the electronics and stops the rolls to the left/right. I'll have to get the link from one of my clanmates.. he used it and it works fine.

I only have to calibrate my Sidewinder once.  Obviously this would have to be done with a Windows reinstall, but never again after that.  My Logitech joystick is so far gone that it is completely unsuable.

Definitely...please!  I really do like the weight/feel of the stick.  If there is some third party app that could make it useable again, that would be SCHWEEEEET!

I have had the same problem.  In fact, 2 clan members and 8+ clan members from my community have had had the same problem.  The bummer is, that when it's "fresh" it's the best joystick in terms of precision and agility.  I've gotten used to it and am now reluctant to change sticks.  I now buy them from CompUSA and buy the 5 dollar replacement plan (Best Buy and Circuit City have the same plans) on it so I don't have to buy a new stick full price each time it goes down.

As for the Click, It click on UP but nowhere else for me.

Here you all go!

This software removes all calibration from windows so you can re-calibrate it correctly. My buddy used it becuase his rudder pulled to the left, and now it works fine.
