Last time I played a city building game it was Sim City 2000. I got hooked for a few months but got bored of its simplicity.
Now, Cities XL 2011 is on an entirely different level... Safe to say I'm hooked.
The detail in it is astounding. There are flaws, but it's great fun building a realistic city.
Here is an example of an incredible one (not mine):

It has a steep learning curve, and you'll fuck up several cities before you get one right, but once you do and it starts growing well it's incredibly satisfying.
My current city is at 444,000 inhabitants and is growing a lot. Looking to get it to 1 million in a few days. I'll get some pics.
If you like this sort of game, I advise you get it... it's great fun. Reviews say little about it because of some of the flaws (traffic problems, laggy interface) but I disagree. It's a great time killer and you end up getting hooked on the smallest of things - like making sure your entire city is build on a grid based system. I love it because it makes you need to think about every aspect of the city from minute one. You can't just start building random roads and house and hope it all comes together, if you don't plan ahead everything will fail later on.
