Thanks , saved me some google time. We get Cyclones every couple of years or so. This one was just much larger. Thing with the buildings in North Queensland is that they are usually subject to building codes that includes a certain amount of cyclone proofing. Most of the buildings that were destroyed were built before 1974 or so, and werent subject to these codes.

I think all of the planning in the world wouldnt fix a cyclone this big.

Yea its the same here in florida with building codes. I was just thinking that has to be horrifying getting turned away with small children. Moving inland soon is about the only thing you can do with a storm that size. That is how you deal with large amoumts of people evacuating. Unfortunatley even with modern day meteorology technology hurricane/cyclone tracks can turn abruptly. The best bet is to try and get away from the coast in general to avoid the the storm surge. The surge is often more dangerous than both the winds and rain.

He has never had water on his cultivation before.

Lockyer Creek runs behind his cultivation.
The times on the photos say it all.
He is upstream from Grantham which got the full force of the creek, and another creek (Flagstone Creek)

Which joins into it just before Grantham.

Frightened Australian cyclone evacuees turned away

wow that sucks. How frequently are you guys hit with cyclones? I wonder if there will be any fallout or new planning to deal with this.
Aus rarely gets hit by any Hurricanes... But when it hits, it hits hard.

We get plenty of cyclones in the area but they usually don't come aground. They are predicting another ~4 cyclones before the end of the cyclone season but they don't think any will make landfall in Australia.

It's rare to get a cylcone as gigantic as this one either. Australian cyclones in general are slightly weaker but much much smaller than their American counterparts.

That's pretty nuts man. I'd believe it though.

A mate who plays in another band, the bassist in that band. When the floods started in Brisbane the water was 30cm in his back yard. He had a nap on his couch and 1/2 an hour later his neighbour banged on his door to tell him the water was now 1.5m. This was in a Brisbane suburb that received quite heavy flooding (Rosalie) but Brisbane didn't have the flash flood the Lockyer Valley region received.

Well, I wanted to use hurricane, then you would be all "It's a cyclone in sothern hemisphere dumbass"

and vice versa

so I stuck with tropical storm, same thing no?

Anyway, you'll be assholes anyway so I'll let you flush it out of your system for the day.

there are reports of people dying from this tropical storm, and you make light of it. and then you justify that by saying you don't want to use the wrong nomenclature. really?

What I find incredible is that you think the US has had a tropical storm.

Do you even know what the term tropical means?

Probably means it's around the tropic lines of cancer and Capricorn or something of the sort.

@ Burnzz

Oh boo hoo

People mock the military, they die everyday; people mock black people, they die every day; people mock Christians, there's a few here and there getting persecuted for bringing the word of God to the word. But fuck lets not stop there, people make fun of animals that die every day. People mock the Jews and they were slaughtered in unbelievable numbers too.

People are dying everyday everywhere in the world. It doesn't stop you from mocking and it doesn't stop anybody else, so don't start bashing me you old geizer.

OT, Victoria has copped a bit too - we caught part of that storm and it was a seriously heavy downpour for temperate regions.
