I am in need of some assistance with a new monitor purchase. I am helping dad with a new monitor selection but am running into conflicting reports about monitors.

The new DELL 24" would be the ideal pick but as everyone knows BF2 does not support widescreen. Although you can stretch this to make it work the hud just seems a bit goofy from what I can see. Does anyone have this monitor and would you be able to give feedback or some screen shots on the performance? Do you like it/hate or wish it could be better? Ghosting?

The Samsung 214T is the next pick. Same questions minus the widescreen support since this model is not widescreen. Any help would be appreciated.

I would get the 214T, the HUD's look like shit on widescreen (case in point: F-35, J-10, and sniper rifles)

Edit: However I see they are both LCD's, check the reaction time.

I have a 2005FPW (20.1" widescreen). Being a former CRT user before switching to this, I must say I really enjoy it. There's always a big shmozz about the whole ghosting thing.. but I believe my monitor is 16ms and I have had no issues. Anything you see in the first week will become normal. The 2405FPW however is newer and most likely better than my monitor, so yeah.

Just look up a few reviews on google, shouldn't be hard to find.

Over at hardocp one of the members did an input lag comparison, the dell was faster. Id say you go with the dell.

I have the dell 24" widescreen --> my desktop

I run BF2 on 1600x1200 all graphics max at 45 fps without any ghosting
1600x1200 and 1920x1200 hi res sceenshots available upon request

It is a great screen (I also use it for Photoshopping and Video editing)
and it has a few things other 24" screens don't have:
- VGA DVI, RGB and Component connections !
- integrated usb hub
- integrated card reader
- rotation up/down/left right/ 90 degrees
- picture in picture

And if you rather buy a Samsung, guess what:
The screen of the dell 24" is manufactured by Samsung.

Thanks for the screen shots I really appreciate the help goldman. I did know it was made by Samsung and it is my first choice since of course it is 24". With the 1600x1200 are you moding the settings to get it to stretch and are you losing any viewable area doing so? From these screenshots I see none. I have googled over and over guys looked up and down I just wanted to post and get some more input from people from these boards. I trust more here then anywhere else since I love this site and "most" the people. It has 8ms response time from what I remember dont have it pulled up yet.

Can you by chance give a few more images of Karkand with close up tank shots and a few other nice snaps? I would so much appreicate it... What video card are you running? System specs? Thanks in advance!

And what about what he said:

I would get the 24'' monitor if you have a system to be able to run at the resolution.  I thought that there were fixes for running in widescreen at www.widescreengaming.com or something of that sort where you simply make a couple changes to the config file and it fixes it for you, including the HUD etc.

Also, from what I understand, LCDs are made to run at their native resolution in the 24'' case 1920x1200 (I believe) not the 1600x1200.  When running at a different resolution it can cause scaling problems and also burn out the monitor faster because it has to work overtime to convert the pixels to fit the screen instead of displaying the way it was meant to.

You can get BF2 to run in any (i think) resolution by chucking (for example) +szx 1920 +szy 1200 after the path for the BF2 shortcut...

Yes I think you need to also edit one of the con files also to make this work correctly.

I have the 24 DELL and it rocks. However you must have a system that can run the game @1200x1600. If that is the case, the dell kicks hte only thing that i would get instead of the 24 is the 30. Its a little pricey right now though.

Currently I am running a AMD 4600X2 2 gig Corsair and 7800GTX 256 so I do not think that will be a issue. Soon I will have a 7900GTX Superclock 512 so I do not think this will be a issue.

Are you stretching it with the above said commands and did you edit any con files?

If you heard people saying there is ghosting in BF2 with the 204B, the 214T would be even worse....  204B has the better response time.

I'm not sure that you do... because it sets the resolution manually when you start the game... Someone correct me if i'm wrong!

Posted this elsewhere, but it fits here too...quicky camera shot of my monitor, Karkand, 1920x1080.

http://www.bavarianfalcon.com/images/rig/bf2003big.jpg  (2.6mb file for you dialup users that might be out there)

Notice the FPS, which holds steady.  Do keep in mind that you're looking at a camera shot, with flash, it looks much better in person or with a screen capture.

Also notice that the only real "artifact" of running widescreen is that the mini-map gets more oval shaped, as seen in Goldman's most excellent screen caps and my cam shot...but nothing else in the game suffers from this, the proportions are all normal.  The other downside is that by forcing widescreen resolutions, you don't really widen the field of view, and you loose some of the top and bottom screen compared to 4:3 aspect ratios.  Nothing that affects gameplay at ALL.

Here's a good thread on the subject:  http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/fo … hlight=bf2

As for ghosting, neither my "old" 2005FPW or my new Westinghouse 37" suffer from the problem that I can notice.

System specs are:

Athlon X2 4400+, Crossfire Radeon X1900XT, Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe, 2mb RAM, Diamond Xtreme DDL 7.1 sound card, Westinghouse Digital LVM37-W1 1080p LCD monitor.
