yeah some iplayer programs, or even specific scenes, seem to have a shitty codec or something... pretty sure its related to the iplayer itself.

annoying, i know... and when listening on a 5.1 system it separates the sound so pretty much one satellite speaker is constantly screeching

I've never noticed any such problems with iPlayer.

You watching on the website or via the desktop client? Try the other one, maybe.

Via the website, I'll try the client and see if that makes any difference, uzique's explanation makes sense as i've got 5.1 and it was only my front right speaker making the annoying screech. Got annoying when my centre speaker started doing the same. Fixed it by having them face down on the desk. Messes up the sound a bit but stops the noise being too bad.

You could change your settings to just use 2.1 or w/e, for when you're watching iPlayer. Could be a solution.

This is so going to rape wireless A & N networks and anything else that operates in the 5GHz band.

iPlayer only outputs in stereo, does it not? Therefore you'd want something else to be expanding the sound to all those channels. Something like Prologic II or DTS Connect...

That's what I do with it and it sounds fine over 5.1.

I have 6gb Corsair XMS DDR3 2000 RAM, but I've only been able to get it to run stable at 1800 on my Gigabyte X58 USB3 mobo.  (However, I had read that 1800 is typically more stable with 12gb setups, so I wasn't too worried by this as I had considered eventually doubling my RAM....)

Newegg has Corsair XMS DDR3 1600 (6gb) for only $65 right now, and I've read that it handily OCs to 1800.  This is $80 cheaper than an additional 6gb of the 2000-rated RAM I already have installed, making an upgrade to 12gb look attractive at the moment.

If I were to pop 6 GB of the DDR3 1600 into my mobo, set so that it was running at 1800 just like the RAM that's already installed, would/should it run fine in theory?

(I would basically have 1600-rated RAM that was overclocked to 1800, running alongside 2000-rated RAM that is underclocked to 1800....)

Or is this just batshit crazy and I should just wait for a later deal on DDR3 2000?

I'm just using the funny little holes on the back of the mobo

You won't notice any real life performance differences above 1600, tbh...

does this sound reasonable for general home use, no gaming, £300-350?

Intel Pentium Dual Core P6000 1.86GHz
3GB RAM
320GB HDD
15.6" HD CineCrystal
Integrated (Intel® GMA X4500 3D Graphics with up to 384MB Shared Memory)
DVD Writer
HDMI, Upto 4Hrs Battery
Windows 7 Home Premium

looking for two decent and fast laptops to replace ours and i've only read positive reviews

however is this kind of spec going to get left behind soon or something gay?

My northbridge or whatever it's called for i7 gets too hot to touch after a quick stress test while the RAM and CPU heatsinks are still cool. even though 30 minutes of prime95 makes my cpu temperature a full 72 degrees, and that with a noctua NH-U12P cooler and several casefans.

another weird issue is that the temperature readings are fucked in the first place. No matter what program, it goes like:

CPU temp: 42c
start stress test, 1 second later temperature is 65
stop test, temperature INSTANTLY drops back down to 42c

I'm not sure you can gain and then cool upwards of 20c in under a second

Get the charger made for your laptop by the company that built yours.
