I think the general purpose behind Hybrids was, as you said, marketing.  Although, it's not all bad...

The average consumer is unfamiliar with the technology behind electric cars and not typically familiar with growing energy concerns.  Hybrids essentially served as a first step to acclimate people towards using an electric vehicle.

Jumping headlong into electric cars didn't work in previous instances, so hybrids were a logical choice from the perspective of an automaker.

From a consumer viewpoint, it makes more sense to wait until full electric cars are more economical.  They eventually will be, but unfortunately, oil will likely be almost gone by then.  It will be less of a voluntary shift than a mandatory one.

Eventually the oil companies will run so low on product that they will have to siphon whatever ressources they have left into alternatives, let's hope they go towards extracting Hydrogen from sea-water... Because hydrogen is the closest renewable fuelsource to the current oil-based in terms of "stop - fill up - go"...

Bioethanol isn't an option on a global scale since it would require too many crops that are currently used to feed the population.. unless ofcourse those scientists that are currently developing that breakthrough algea come up with a way to use and refine it without introducing it to the ecosystem...

Nuclear power (eventually going from fission to fusion and being supplemented with Wind/Water/Solar power) and using that to generate hydrogen fuel seems like the best solution to me.

It can be done, but it will only be done when it needs to be done. I think right now the world is going the way of battery electric hybrids or full battery electric vehicles. Personally it's not really the right way forward unless someone can come up with a battery that's as good as a petrol tank (in all aspects)

Biofuels could be done. I reckon if someone was willing to invest into turning the Sahara desert (or any humongous empty peice of land) into land good enough to grow Biofuels they'd make a killing selling all that fuel, but it'd probably cost hundreds of billions just to do such a massive project. Infact I remember reading that the amount of land required to grow enough Biofuel to replace Fossil fuel isn't even that big.

So really Biofuel isn't the solution. And IMO hydrogen is, atleast it is easier to obtain than biofuel and the main ingredient is all around us.

Hopefully these cars sell very well, because the US auto-industry really needs to be more competitive to survive.

looks like it.

For the 2012 model year, Ford decided to reunite both international and North American models by releasing the international Mk3 worldwide. The current North American version will thus be discontinued, and one new model — a five-door hatchback/liftback sedan — will be launched for this market simultaneously with the Mk3 launch in Europe, both scheduled to start production for Europe and North America late in 2010 and market launch early in 2011.
