I think the general purpose behind Hybrids was, as you said, marketing. Although, it's not all bad...
The average consumer is unfamiliar with the technology behind electric cars and not typically familiar with growing energy concerns. Hybrids essentially served as a first step to acclimate people towards using an electric vehicle.
Jumping headlong into electric cars didn't work in previous instances, so hybrids were a logical choice from the perspective of an automaker.
From a consumer viewpoint, it makes more sense to wait until full electric cars are more economical. They eventually will be, but unfortunately, oil will likely be almost gone by then. It will be less of a voluntary shift than a mandatory one.
Eventually the oil companies will run so low on product that they will have to siphon whatever ressources they have left into alternatives, let's hope they go towards extracting Hydrogen from sea-water... Because hydrogen is the closest renewable fuelsource to the current oil-based in terms of "stop - fill up - go"...
Bioethanol isn't an option on a global scale since it would require too many crops that are currently used to feed the population.. unless ofcourse those scientists that are currently developing that breakthrough algea come up with a way to use and refine it without introducing it to the ecosystem...
