In short - it's asinine to put down modern music because it's not good "compared" to a group like the Beatles or The Who. They were pioneers of a genre that was just starting to pick up. I could just as easily argue that music today has no originality compared to what Bach, Mozart and Beethoven created.

also poseidon the hallmark and defining part of 20th century music is that it marked the first complete shift away from the likes of "beethoven, bach and mozart"... so you don't know what you're talking about, either. the one defining thing in musical composition and theory in the 20th century was the development of the chromatic scale by arnold schoenberg, and the resulting experiments in atonality/microtonality, phasing, minimalism etc. that was the most major (and intentional) shift away from the classical-romantic tradition... pretty much ever.

yes you can. you entirely can. there's a clear evolution of rock music from the who -> interpol
if you wanted to say that you couldn't compare brahms to indonesian gamelan ensemble music... i'd agree. there's no mutual history/influence.
but there's a very clear creative narrative thread joining the likes of the who to interpol.
just because the end-sound isn't similar, doesn't mean it has had no influence.
