Thanks Link.

Also, issue: I went through my Google Contacts and gave almost everyone nice, high-res contact pictures. Then when it synced to my phone, I tried calling someone who had one of these new pictures and their picture on the phone was horrifyingly pixelated. How do I fix this?

You cant, it's a long term annoyance people have been complaining about. Supposedly google are working on a fix.

Oh well, I figure it'll find its way into Gingerbread or Honeycomb or Ice Cream or Jello or whatever the hell they'll call the update where that fix is included.

I got an update to 2.3 the other day. Well, it said updating to 2.3, when I looked i the settings (since I didn't notice the keyboard change) it said system version 2.3. I guess that is Verizon's update, for their network. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come, soon.

Save your Contact photos in 200x200 format, then you can either start assigning pictures via Google Contacts or through the phone itself (it's up to you since Google will do the necessary syncing between the two). If you do that, then your pictures will be in perfect clarity all over the phone, regardless of whether you've set up a contact shortcut on one of your homescreens, in your contact list or when you're using the actual telephone part of your phone. That's what I've done and everything is crystal clear.

My update on my HTC Magic to 2.2.1 came in two stages. I got one update that didn't change anything at all and then according to the phone in a few hours the second update would be ready. In actuality it came about 6 hours later, but it still arrived. Perhaps yours might also take some time. Did you happen to notice if the update you applied said "System Update (1 of 2)"? That's what the title of the update I had said.

Gingerbread has been slowly rolling out to HTC Desire HDs (and I believe the normal Desire, too) recently, iirc. If you want to be sure, check out www.androinica.com. Out of the Android blogs/news sites, they're the one that I prefer.

I'm trying to do it on my phone, but it wants to crop the 200x200 image into something smaller. Then it won't be 200x200. What do?

nvm i'm an idiot

nope, I figured out how to adjust the crop size thing so it used the whole image... but they're still pixelated. For instance, on the Favorites widget, my three contacts on it have pixelated pictures.

this is frustrating

Create the 200x200 pictures on your computer first (Photoshop, Paint.NET, Gimp, etc.) and THEN send it to your phone (I did it via Gmail Contacts for the majority of my friends, the rest I just pulled their pictures from Twitter/Facebook by syncing the appropriate contact cards together). I would honestly recommend doing as much as you can from your computer - after all, the whole benefit of Android is that everything is synced to the cloud, so why not take advantage of doing everything on a nice big screen where you have a mouse and a full-featured image editor.

I did... I made it in PS, highest quality JPEG, then I put it on the SD card. Just now I got a phone call from one of the friends whose photo I edited on my computer, and it was all pixelated and ugly.

hmm all my contacts photos were synced somehow through facebook so everyone has on their profile photos .. pretty cool   even shows their status without being logged in. pixelated? yes. but i do not mind

Odd. I don't have this problem on my HTC Magic... Try doing it via Gmail Contacts and see if you see a difference there.

Try it with Gmail Contacts on your computer, those images override anything that was previously synced (at least they did in FroYo).

As I said it's a known issue. There isn't a fix atm. Any sync'd contact pictures - gmail, facebook etc all become pixelated.

Really? I was sure that would solve the problem... You're using JPEG, you said? That's what I am using, but have you perhaps tried to use a different format?

(I just had my girlfriend call my phone and her picture is crystal clear)

mine did this as also but it is not pixelated.. did it blow the photo up to full screen? the droid x doesn't do this. Perhaps because the software knows it is a bigger than average screen?

If this comes out soon (possibly after ces) I might get it. Is it the equivalent to the HTC desire hd? I suppose they will make you go to 4g on verizon, which may be a problem. Since their 4g plans are currently shit. ..the pricing that is

If it follows the pattern of the past few HTC phones, the more powerful it gets, the smaller the battery gets (I'm serious, the HTC Desire has a bigger battery than the Desire HD - wtf is with that?).
