How loud is the 580 stock cooler compared to the GTX295 cooler? Is it any quieter?

I'd imagine quite a lot quieter, since they have the vapor chamber (at last )

Building a PC from scratch is surprisingly easy. I took my time as it was the first time I ever built one, there were some nerves, but overall it's nothing difficult or special. Did this a few days ago.

Specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II 555 Black Edition (3.2 Jiggahertz)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3
GPU: PowerColor HD5770
RAM: G.Skill RipJaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3
HDD: 500GB Samsung F3
PSU: OCZ 500W StealthStreamX

and some old IDE DVD-RW drive and a generic ATX case that does the job. IDE cables are such a bitch lol, I should've just spent the extra cash on getting a new SATA drive just to save me the hassle of handling that shit.

All for about 370 quid.

Gonna get a new 1440x900 monitor soon.

Assembling a PC is no harder than playing with LEGOs

Good job

Unlock that CPU to a quad core... I managed to successfully do it on my 555.

Intel processors seem way overpriced, even i5 is quite alot and i7 was out of the question. After the 5770 it's the GTX 260, I didn't feel the need to spend that much more for the extra performance. In general I think I got the best price/performance components, and that's usually AMD shit these days.

Initially I was gonna get a quad core AMD, I think the Phenom X4 640. Then I went for this X2 555, cos it was cheaper and there's alot of potential in it should I need it. Which I don't right now to be honest.

The only other decision I had to make was whether to get an 8 series AMD motherboard chipset or a 7 series one, the 7 series was much cheaper and I didn't see anything special about the 8 series so I went with a Gigabyte 770.

It all makes sense, I did research on this shit negroes

i5's are out of my budget, I could've stretched for an i3 maybe. Even then I'd have rather than got an AMD quad core instead.

Good old Athlon XP 3000+..

If an i5 is outside of your budget, and even an i3.. I think you would be better off just waiting longer and saving up the money for it..

Will probably be purchasing the following - beat the VAT increase also;

GPU: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6970
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master V8
Thermal Compound: Arctic Cooling MX-4
Printer: Epson Stylus SX425W

Current System;
Case: Antec 1200
PSU: Antec 850W
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair III AMD 790FX
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 Tri-Core 2.8GHz
RAM: Kingston HyperX 6GB DDR3 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT
What you guys think, good trade offs/upgrades?

8600GT will be used in a mod me and my cousin are going to be doing some point soon.
The current CPU Cooler is the standard AMD btw.
No printer.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Already know about the Tri-Channel RAM too. Overclocking and unlocking will be done soon after new years.

I have no idea about AMD cpus, but I think you would do well to get at least an i5 to do justice for that 6970

Intend to unlock and attempt to overclock with alexb's idea and more. I know there's a bit of room for more on the CPU, but it's getting it right - there's actually a chance to overclock it to X4 @ 3.7 GHz (MAXIMUM - I believe) from X3 @ 2.8 GHz

An i5/7 would be preferable (due to the Tri-Channel Ram) but the CPU can upgraded (if need be) at a later date but then that means the Motherboard needs to be changed also if I chose an Intel processor - so my best bet is either another card (suggestions?) or a good overclock and different RAM

RAM will be changed/sorted later too. First thing was to get certain aspects sorted, and Dual Channel RAM is pretty cheap nowadays.

A tip: Move the reference cooler card to bottom. It runs hotter than the Vapor-X cards, and even hotter when its on top of them. Thats what needs the most cool air.
