I depends ...
American Express if you can't manage your money well because you would be required to pay off at the end of every month (or any other card with such a requirement). Credit cards are
advanced financial instruments, and should be used by those who know how to manage money well, and are in a stable financial situation ... I can't tell you how many people I work with who are in major financial problems simply because of credit cards.
If you can manage money well .... MasterCard/Visa if you want a card that can be used internationally. Discover if you would use it mostly in the United States.
Quick Money Management TestIf you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you may have financial management problems1. Do you often pay bills late?

4. Have you reached your limit on credit cards?
5. Do you pay bills with money that was intended for other things?
6. Do you use credit cards to pay for things that you used to pay for with cash? (On average, credit card uses spend 30% more money than cash users, by the way).
7. Do you delay or omit visits to the doctor or dentist, or not purchase prescriptions, because money is tight?
8. Do you get calls from collection agencies regarding unpaid bills?
9. Do you work overtime or a second job to raise cash to pay bills?
10. Would losing a job (yours or your spouses) create near-instant financial trouble?
11. Is money a constant concern for you?
