Just the opposite of America's Army...in fact, In AA, all of the enemies look like Iraqi soldiers.  This really isn't a big deal at all, with the exception that they are now starting to use the same techniques the the US military came up with 4 years ago (using video games to entice younger recruits).

The Rule: Humans are capable of profound stupidity on so many levels. The more educated, the greater chance to fall from lofty places when offering an opinion that proves The Rule. The overspecialized opinions of people like this journalist, who try to connect games to that war must make a big splat to fall so far with no logic-net to break the fall. Look at it from their (terrorist mod'ers) perspective and we are doing the "same" thing anyway.

We learned to kill before recorded, even illustrated history but somehow it is BF2s fault that young people are doing what? Even babies wrestle each other and use whatever tools they have available. Under any threat or crisis we relearn killing as needed. If training increases self discipline (which it does) and playing BF2 is training (which it is on a few levels) then the fact is people should be more able to resist an impulse to kill. Isn't that how self discipline works? The reason kids kill is fear, self defense, they have been duped or unrepentant tyranny has reached them. The decision to kill comes from opportunity not skills. When the last gun is cut up we will still be able to kill and will when the "need" arrises. (we could discuss what "need" is ad nauseum).

Stand on your soap box Mr. Journalist but make sure the box's label isn't  Acme Meatheads 2 cents each.

By the way yes i am human and have even been on both sides of stupity rule so it's not pure theory lol

So let me get this straight:

They use games to train?

then i have to say one thing
GAMES:

Doesnt learn people how to fly a REAL jet.
Doesnt learn people how to work with Real guns
Doesnt learn people how to use explosives
Doesnt learn people how to be a Sharpshooter
Doesnt learn people how to drive real Armors/Transports
Doesnt learn people how to control a helicopter
etc etc

So Its a waste of time to train on it

So yet again we see how DUMB those Arab militants are.

Torro,
Games in fact do precisley those things you mention and more. They teach researching skills, analytical skills, strategic skills, timing, and etc..

While they do not specifically teach the exact weight and feel of an M60 machinegun they do give you a sense of leading targets, grazing fires and many other individual supporting skills.

Games do train. Games are a very effective way to train. The use of games to train has been documented for at least 4500 years that I know of. Don't underestimate the power games have on increasing human performance.

And please m8 never underestimate ancient cultures....that is a totally visible minefield just waiting for a fool to stumble upon it.

No, they really teach very little of those things. What games do teach, as argued by some psychologists, is the skill and the will to kill, though I disagree even with that. Racking up a few million kills in your career as a gamer, are you going to coldly shoot someone in the gut with a .38 for no apparent reason, unless you were already psychotic?

However, I am not going to deny that Army games do inspire a few positive statistics at military recruitment offices, but I am not going to call it a bad thing. It's a job.

@unnamednewbie

You make a good point about random violence. Your random act of shooting with a .38 is not what I or the original author was refering to. I agree with you on that count, if someone has a .38 and just randomly and impuslively takes a shot and hurts some poor random passers-by that is psychotic. Terrorists and insurgents on the other hand have imperatives and opportunity driving them.

It is opportunity not skills....  pop psychology has a weakness in making sweeping statements without being held to a standard. They say watching violent TV promotes violent behavior but in every case where violent behavior was observed in the studies I read there was opportinuty and "compelling imperative" on the part of the perpetrator (for some people if they believe it then it is true for them - even if is bogus to everyone else). If you look further you will find these other studies which put the others in context. The studies you cite are on the predisposition to violence based on environmental influences.

Perhaps we differ on what training is. Not only does the BF2 "training" do the things I mentioned but it also allows the trainee to experience the visualization and emotion of the task exposing the subconscious mind which cannot discern from "reality" and "virtual reality".  If you play basketball for exapmle if you spend 25% of your practice or "training" time visualizing the games and your perfect skills you will likely perform better than people who just play 100% of the time.

Try flow charting any skill that you have in BF2 and you will find only a few parts that are not transferable to the "out-of-game experience". Chess has been studied extensively clearly demonstrating the transference to "reality" with improved memory and strategic thinking, mathematical skills, etc.. I can cite other examples of studies on training which demonstrate the tremendous power games can have over people.

Still it is imperatives and opportunity not the gaming skills which is the culprit to killing.

I have to disagree with you unamednewbie.  A properly put together video game can teach, albeit at a rudimentary level, some degree of tactics, coordination, teamwork, and strategic thinking.  Games have been used for Millenia to train militaries/warriors.  Now video games are probable not the best medium for that training, but it does give a foundation that can be built on.

I do agree with you that video games do not give players the will to kill someone.  All that pschobabble comes from one of the common links of all the youth related violence in the past years.  All the perps played video games.  Duh, how many kids today in the western world don't play video games.  It's a spurious claim at best.  I am sure that other links can be found as well, like they all attended public schools.  Oh my God, maybe we should shut them down, as all of the murders perpertrated by youthful offenders attended school.
