Did the mobo posts come with little cardboard rings to put on them before placing the mobo?  That's what wound up stopping the shorting for me.

nah, even when seated completely separate from the case on an anti-static pad, with only one RAM stick in...

still machine-gun beeping

EDIT: when i hit the restart/on switch, the CPU FAN spins MOMENTARILY... for like, 0.5sec, and then stops

the beeping also stops whilst the fan spins... or that may be just because the reset switch has been hit

Old school, that's means PS2 keyboard is missing.

i think the keyboard is the least of its worries when it has absolutely no heatsink control

as i said the fan only spins for like half a cycle when i hit the reset switch... as if something is turning it off or it's broken

no progress

really considering sending the whole fucking thing back and ordering a MBP in the morning

just not worth the hassle... have isolated EVERYTHING

cardboard box... only thing connected to mobo is 1 stick of RAM and the ATX power connectors

same old beeping

what prompted you to build your own puter?

i am starting to suspect there is a faulty connection in the top-part of the case, beneath the power switch

when i held it in JUST the right place (i.e. with the right amount of finger pressure), the CPU FAN started spinning and... beeping went away

hmm

"While the task may seem daunting at first, it's actually quite straightforward to put together a computer. All you need is a small screwdriver, some plastic wire ties, and a pair of wire cutters and you can put one together. All of the cables are matched to only go into one slot and anyone who can read can work the motherboard hook ups. It took me about 3 hours to build my first system, now I could do one in less than an hour. There will be some trial and error, particularly if you forgo reading the fan mounting instructions (go ahead...mount that motherboard first...see what happens), but other than that it's a simple game of patience."

i thought about it a few years ago but after some research there were way too many non straight answers

it actually is straight-forward... i've always been okay with putting them together and buying them, spec-wise

the thing that is 'daunting' is this shit i'm dealing with now... TROUBLESHOOTING

anything that requires more of a knowledge than 'how to wire it and put it together' and you're basically fucked

i've isolated my problem now... it's a power problem. the CPU-FAN doesn't seem to get first-dibs on the PSU's power when the system first powers on. the DVD-drive and hard-drives and other case fans hog all the juice and the CPU-FAN stalls for 5-10 seconds. the beeping will start for a short part of that time, but then afterwards goes away as the CPU FAN starts to spin. not really sure how to correct this or 'fix' it, tbh.

leave the DVD-drive and hard-drives and other case fans unplugged

is the cpu fan a standard 120mm fan with a molex connector or did it come with the fan?

i think the POST error beep codes are normally in the booklet, did you look it up?

the error means power problem

CPU fan has a wired power for it, 4-pin

and yeah i am leaving them unplugged for now... but i'm gonna need them

sounds like a power problem, uzique

didn't you get a modular psu? unplug and plug both ends of all the essential cables and make sure they are in

you'll get there in the end, i'm sure

yeah i'll get a CX in the new year

it's running smoothly behind me now

the problem i have now? my samsung 21" screen has died... it just lets out a squealing broken-transistor noise

and actually don't have the spare cash this month to buy a new monitor... hahahahaha

what was the fix in the end?

was that the screen that stops working if it goes into standby?

and i know it's working cause there's no beeping, heatsink is spinning, and keyboard num/caps lights are working

just no display device now.

And how are you certain of that? It seems as soon as something doesn't work right away you assume it is dead and get it replaced.

yeah.

i'm not sure what the fix was... i did everything. reseated, rescrewed, reseated RAM, rebuilt from scratch, essentially

the heatsink fan will spin 3-4 times and not go anywhere on boot-up... then it kicks into life

and yeah it's the screen that dies in standby... and of course, it's been off for 6 weeks now

don't think it's coming back

i know this screen was on the way out because it was temperamental and faulty on my old system

and also the high-pitch squeal coming from the back power-unit of the screen doesn't bode well

it just flashes on and off in standby... it did it with my last system, which was working perfectly
