mine has heatpipes and i put a line down the middle in the direction of the pipes... same as i did with my q6600 years ago

managed to get the heatsink bolted on, finally. pain in the ass. the 'X' directions tip and 1-align, 2-screw, 3- tighten technique worked... ish

now the other bitching task is mounting the mobo inside my case. it doesn't seem to want to fit snugly enough.

0.5mm to the 'right' of the true-side and I/O mounting plate... i have to kinda apply sideways force to get the mobo pins to line-up

ok, set it all up

completely wired... all wired properly, too

ABSOLUTELY NO POWER ON

the PSU fan span for about 0.5 seconds... and then nothing

what could be causing this? 2 completely different computers... i am utterly at a loss

ok this time it started up, the front fan went... the hard-drives span up...

no rear fan, no CPU fan, nothing... and they're all plugged in

wtf causes only half the thing to boot?

i left the speaker out at the moment

everything is booting now except for the heatsink/CPU fan

the CPU-FAN jumper cable is definitely connected, but the fan doesn't power on... at all.

Is it a two or three pin connection?  Tried it on another socket?

the heatsink is a 4-pin connection and i've tried it on both 4-pin sockets... no fan spinning

i have also connected the machine to a monitor and keyboard but it seems it is sending no display signal

the fan on the ATI card spins on power-up, so it's getting juice

Both PSU plugs connected to MB?  Unplug the new GPU.  Put in your old one for now.  Use DVI, not HDMI.

i've taken out the RAM and the GPU

installed the mobo speaker

with no RAM in it just lets out a long, quick-beeping noise that doesn't stop

it doesn't matter... if i power on the machine with no graphics, no RAM, no anything...

i get a short, long, machine-gun like beeping noise

mobo dead? just great

Chill pill

- plug in GPU.  Make sure both power connections are connected.  Plug to DVI
- seat in just one Ram
- USB or PS2 keyboard?  If you got a PS2, plug it in.  BIOS might be lookiing for a PS2 keyboard.
- reset CMOS

i've got a hdmi cable from a housemate. it sends out no display signal.

with 1 RAM and 0 RAM, it doesn't work... just machine-gun beeping.

only a USB keyboard here i'm afraid, but doesn't matter as i can't see any POST screens, anyway

crucially the CPU FAN is still not spinning so i'm afraid of leaving it running for 30secs+ at once

HDMI is flaky when building a new rig.  It often doesn't go on unitl OS is ready.  You will need DVI first until everything is all good.

Got a spare fan to replace the HS fan for now?

no, just case fans... and another heatsink... but fuck remounting ANOTHER heatsink tonight after that nightmare

i just don't understand it...

the hard-drives seem to continually start and restart loading, too. it's like the power is fucked or something.

I am confused what the situation is now.

It is very simple, plug in only required components, no HDD or anything like that, make sure the rams are in right slots (primary ones) and graphics card is in the primary 16X slot, pci-e power cables connected the gfx card, 8pin and 24pins to the mobo etc.

You may even put it together on table.

No need to remove the heatsink.  Use a similar size fan to replace the HS fan.

Next, get a DVI connection going.

Is the harddrive clean, or are you using one with an OS already?

Which PSU are you using?

Edit:  yeah, HD not needed at this point.

the situation is that the heatsink fan doesn't seem to work, period

i'm using a corsair 600w PSU which is enough to power this small build atm

i'm stripping it all down again...

Does the PSU have a 4-pin Fan connection?  Try that.  If not, replace just the fan.

nah the PSU doesn't

the PSU didn't have a connection for my creative x-fi card, either... but that's the least of my worries right now

i'm reseating the mobo at the moment to rule out the possibility of it shorting out against the case

Like Panzer noted, keep it out of the case for now.

Lay the unit on some non-conductive, non-static surface (MB box?), plug Ram, GPU with DVI, CPU/HS/Fan only.  Reset CMOS.  Step by step.

I haven't replied to this thread b/c there are much more capable minds helping you, but this is exactly what gave my last PC issues that were very similar to what you're describing.  So good luck, and hopefully it's something simple like reseating the mobo.

(and I determined this by having everything work laid out on a wooden table, as is being suggested)

yeah they're placed in the right spots for my socket-type... i screwed them in with big-head screws, removed them all and tried again with small-head screws... still same beeping problem, and no CPU fan.

sorting out all the wiring now so that i can run the mobo off a cardboard box with an anti-static sheet on it
