64GB SSD OS drive on a 2.5 bay.  ~$100 these days, at least here in the US.

1TB normal drive for the same price, though. Uzique wants storage.

Salvage the old drives.  Put the SSD on the 2.5 bay.  Moot point though unless he already has Windows 7 --> TRIM.

Edit:  you Europeans are seriously getting raped on PC parts.  1TB here goes for around $60'ish.

Good point.

(And I'm not sure what the exact price for a 1TB drive is, I'm a bit out of touch. I recall paying somewhere around £70 around a year ago)

what you dont understand is that ive lost about 1Tb of music/films in my life

i'd rather have 2x 1Tb drives than 1x64Gb for launching team fortress 2 fucking 2 seconds quicker

cause when that 1Tb crashes

all the second shaving in the world doesn't help the pain

so i'm probably going to spend up to £750.

and i'll probably buy a pre-built system because i just CANNOT DO with the hassle of making a system again

i'll fuck it up

cause the last did i did it was oct 2007, literally 3 years ago... and i was well into my tech, then.

now i just don't know anything about current gen systems and, to be honest, after having a motherboard blow something and having gone through 4 weeks of headaches trying to take shit apart and put it back together etc. i'm afraid something else will go wrong again. i just want a computer that works - i fucking hate the hours of head-scratching and stress that comes with things that don't work properly. also, cable management and working with power supplies and shit now is a major headache i don't want to bother with. i am incapable and im not sure i want to spend 4 hours with a step-by-step guide.

someone spec me a system in the £600-750 range. only stipulation is that the mobo needs room for a creative x-fi card.

Ah what about a barebones system? Problem with people speccing for you on this forum they fucking over do it thinking you want a system that can play crysis,tf2 and cod and the same time!

To be perfectly honest, if I were to get a new PC I'd probably get someone to build it. The saved money isn't necessarily worth it considering the time, effort, sweat, cuts, bruises and headaches involved.

yeah that's the most 'hands-on' and practical stuff that i dread doing, tbh

mounting mobo, wiring PSU, messing with cable-management

i dont have the practicality anymore

The wiring is a real son of a bitch!  I always use too many cable ties and when I need to change something I have to cut like 20-30 ties off to move the cables around...it always seems like a good idea at the time!  lol

i'm the same but i don't like buying budget systems

if i have to get a whole new computer, i don't see the point in spending $300 on something that will be useless next year

at least get something that has some future-proofing; an investment as much as an on-the-spot purchase

and finray i have a mac. i've been using my mac every day for 4 weeks. it is perfect.  i really don't think my sony vaio would have served me as well. the only annoyance is, as ive said before, i spend way too much money going out and not enough money staying inside being sensible anymore. a computer is a good little... home magnet

That mobo has 4 (!) PCI-E slots, and a PCI one, so loads of space. The 6850 is a GTX460 beater. 2 TB of space for £90, yum. 4GB is all you'll need for memory, that's a good PSU, but you may be able to salvage the one from your old PC. i5 760, probably the best CPU out just now.

Also I assumed you'll use the old case and optical drive.

I've found that student loans on a Visa combined with an internet connection can often be more expensive than a night out

is there REALLY that much of a difference between the 460 768mb and the 460 1gb?

ive found a prebuilt system with all the above specs for £650 but the 1gb isn't selectable as a customisable graphics card
