I didn't say that, Beduin.  Although after the cartoon controversy, I'm sure things were a little tense.  The fact that some of the people connected to Jyllands-Posten had to go into hiding isn't a good mark for Islam overall.

Nevertheless, I'm not suggesting that Muslims should be feared.  As I mentioned, Williams was demonstrating an irrational preconception.  However, he wasn't being spiteful about it.  To fire him rather than engage him on the subject just makes the situation worse, because now, public figures who do have prejudices just aren't going to talk about them as much.

It's much better to air these things out than to pretend they don't exist.

Yep, the whole prohibition on visually portraying Muhammad is actually something that came late in Islam.  Nowadays, Muslims seem to act like it was always the case.

I was referring to the time when the Russians were the enemy and the Mujahedeen were the noble freedom fighters of Afghanistan - as depicted by the media at the time... but you already knew that.
Actually, when the atrocities committed against the Soviet troops came out after the war (remember media weren't embedded back then) the West was horrified by what those we had supported had done.

People didn't know what they were doing, and the Soviets weren't sharing, either

Yeah well... in the Ruskies defence,  it would seem kinda stupid to invade a country and then complain about atrocities commited against them!

Had a good laugh when I heard this story.  Jesse Jackson said, "... walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved."  Must learn to confine that concern to one's own race, Juan.

Not true. lets stay on topic... FEAR MUSLIMS.

Exactly! They are not better than us, are they? We have to find a place to implement it, we can start with the holy ground zero.

We are not affraid of the busdriver, the local pizzaman or even hizb-ul-tahrir. We have many issues here, but fear is not one of them.

What does a journalist feeling nervous about getting on plane with muslims have to do with how the Saudis organise their road network around Mecca?

It was just mindless muslim bashing, when other religions are equally bigoted and dangerous.

Let's see...

Thread is about an American journalist fired from his job, for simply speaking his minor nervousness while being on a plane with people that stand out by dressing in traditional muslim garb. His opinion, his nervousness.
He didn't say "Ban Muslims from aircraft!"
He didn't say "Everyone! Fear the evil moooslims!"
He didn't say "Muslims should be forced to use different aircraft than non-Muslims"
He admitted to being nervous while flying with people that chose to clearly identify themselves as Muslims in traditional garb.

Contrast this with our good friend and ally, Saudi Arabia, who openly practices bigotry and segregation, by declaring whole cities off limits to lowly non-Muslims.

Which of these two nations is going out of their way to be fair to other religions?

Now, exactly, WTF does another round of Israel bashing have to do with that?

Oh, right, Dilbert found a marginal excuse for more "Mindless Israeli/Jew bashing"
Carry on.
If he did anything else here, we might think his account compromised, or that he'd had a stroke of some sorts.

And if the ex-US military types stopped the mindless muslim-bashing we'd think two of their brain-cells had paired up and started exchanging electrons.

And how is that different to the Israelis? Declaring their entire country is for one religion only, and bits of other people's country likewise.

You do understand that citizenship was offered to, and declined by, the majority of Muslims...? It was their own choice.

Which wouldn't be happening if the Muslim population within Israel had accepted their fate as citizens of Israel. With 20.3% of the population they could surely make their presence felt in the political sphere and be a nice counterweight to the hard right that seems to have come to power since Gaza started shooting rockets on a daily basis. It's their own fault. I have no sympathy.

Even better, they might've helped steer a course within Israel that would've led to less conflict with Palestine and the rest of Israel's neighbors.
