"Tony Abbott has accused the Gillard government of failing to back three soldiers facing criminal charges over the deaths of Afghan civilians."

"The charges stem from a night-time raid 19 months ago by soldiers of the elite Special Operations Task Group on a residential compound in Oruzgan province.

Defence says the commandos were acting on intelligence that a senior Taliban leader was alleged to be hiding in the house.

During the attack, in which two hand grenades were thrown, six civilians died, including five children. Four other people were injured."

It's a tad more than that.

The soldiers were targeting an insurgent leader who was not found at an initial compound. A crucial part of the prosecution argument will rest on the decision to move to a second compound, and whether the intelligence was sufficient for it to be approached with the same level of stealth and tactics.

The soldiers claim they exchanged fire for an extended period with an Afghan man who was killed. They maintain he had reloaded his weapon, a sign they were under sustained attack. Those close to the soldiers are adamant that grenades were necessary because they were under fire after the first grenade was thrown and the shots only ceased after a second was thrown.

The insurgent was hiding in a room with civilians..

I guess people are just apathetic now days, given that US forces have already killed so many civilians in the "war on terror"...

It was a battle, civilians were caught up - which is somewhat different from Abu Ghraib for example.

Killing kids with grenades by accident compared with torturing civilians to death as part of government policy?

i dunno why you people politicize this issue and get all ultra-patriotic.

armies get a share of fucking sociopaths, nutjobs and people that can't handle combat-situations.

it's not a particular condition of, say, the american psyche, or the australian disposition, or the british mentality.

when you need a lot of troops in a combat theatre, you're going to inevitably and hastily enlist some fucking cuntjobs that would be better off with a bullet in their head. similarly, mistakes are going to be made, anyway... human mistakes, not nationally engendered mistakes. it's so fucking retarded to trade this whole 'well americans kill civvies!', 'brits did it in the balkans!', 'australians did it with with the natives!' bollocks. we're all humans, we're all brutal bastards. no country is going to emerge as the light-bearing nation of saints and saviors.

we're all in it for ourselves, really. altruistic war is bullshit.

I think the biggest difference would be, were Marine not calling out the obvious double-standard/hypocrisy, that the reaction of most US people on this forum to that article--rather than apathy--would be anger at the Taliban for putting the women and children in danger. A purposeful action of which the Aussie troops could not have been aware, nor could they have been made aware in a timely manner while dealing with the situation during the firefight.

Yet some would expect them to have known--or, more properly, if the soldiers' nationality had been different, would have expected it. Had the soldiers been US, they would have been expected to have negotiated or backed off in some other way. But because they are non-US troops stuck in a situation US troops find themselves regularly, "war is hell" is the response from non-US posters.

That was the point, as I see it. The difference in initial reaction, based on the nationality of the troops in the OP and the nationality of those reading it on these forums.

It's an interesting dynamic we have here on bf2s. I suppose it exists elsewhere, as well.

It's not a matter of politics or patriotism, really. Rather a social/cultural dynamics issue that normally devolves into a political/nationalistic issue.
