Looks like that stuff is really nasty, very basic and red. I'm guessing the red is from cadmium, because it's not the dark red of iron oxide.

The company responsible for this claims that the sludge is "not hazardous" by EU standards.

I guess their standards aren't particularly high.

no, I think the company lied.

EU standards tend to be tighter than US standards, due to the socialist governments applying tighter regulations on industries.

Cadmium?

Nasty. Don't want to be anywhere near that.

It's probably the US's fault...most likely Bush's.

Hmm... if it IS cadmium (enough to account for the colour that is) then we have the mother of all environmental/human disasters on our hands here. Somehow I doubt it.

yeah I was thinking that too...

Probably some other oxide other than iron oxide.

but that sludge has a lot of heavy metals regardless...

stuff must be as thick as shit.

Considering you can move massive amounts of cargo by using water based shipping. It's a risk versus reward thing here.

Well, that, and this is Eastern Europe we're talking about....

I guess that the structural damage to houses was not caused by the force of the flood alone...

Is not Moldova though. Hungary's ratings are very close to other western european countries.

Okay, before any specialists speculate any further here is a public statement from the Hungarian Academy of Science about the content of the spilled red sludge:
http://mta.hu/cikkek/a-vorosiszap-szenn … sai-125707

Iron-oxide and aluminium-oxide is NOT a health risk. The sludge's heavy metal content(like vanadium) is well below any health hazard standard(US and EU alike).
The big problem is that the sludge contains a huge concentration of sodium-hydroxide(lye, NaOH), which is a very strong alkali, used in the process of extracting aluminium from bauxite. In fact the NaOH concentration is so high(around 5-8% according to HAS) that it causes 3rd degree chemical burns, at least one victim died because of this.
And just because we are talking about eastern Europe it does not mean that the standards are lower.

That's strange I thought the attacks in this thread were triggered by an instigating post by a moderator...

Huh, weird.
No, they were instigated by someone making a personal attack. There was no "instigating post by a moderator".

The post I made, since it now apparently must be explained, was pointing out the default position by many (particularly Euros) here. Yes, it is ridiculous and totally non-applicable to this, which is why it was made--to point out the ridiculous and generally non-applicable nature of the default position.

Satire and irony are apparently lost on many. It devolved immediately into exchanged of "grow the fuck up" and "twat", not all of which were directed at me.

So I did my job as a mod and cleaned up the personal attacks--one was directed at me and one was pseudo-defending me. Both were inappropriate and violated the rules. I felt leaving the entire content would just lead to further BS, so I removed all of it, leaving a note as to why it was removed.

Does that explain the fucking Days of Our Lives drama for you all?

Yeah well there's no point making silly posts and then going on an edit-spree, it just messes everything up for no reason.

No I get the purpose of it, but it just seemed completely off topic and not particularly appropriate. It doesn't invalidate people's points on other subjects regarding American interventionism either. I'm not being a dick, I'm just curious as to how you thought that post would go down?
