Hmm, the system sent me a mail saying that I should accept a mission from one of the old mails. How do I even accept missions?

This game is kinda hard on me...as the deer came running towards my post, wagging its tail...I could not shoot it.

Had a very successful hunt, then a not-so-successful one.

On the first hunt, found a pretty small male, then I ran into a group of four females, managed to bag three of them.

On the second hunt, I tracked a pretty average female, shot her from about 10-15 feet, must have missed anything major, just a flesh wound, so I just ended the hunt there

Welcome to another Status Update!

First of all I would like to apologize for the downtime earlier this week. Due to a number of bad things happening at once, starting with what appears to have been a kernel bug, it took more than a day to get online again. We are analyzing this to take measures to prevent it from happening again as well as improving our infrastructure to cope with unforseen hardware or software failures.

I would like to thank the community for the support during the stressful time when we recovered from the error. We received a lot of encouraging and supportive messages. As a way to say thanks for holding out, and compensate for the downtime, we will extend all (paid) memberships with one week (this will happen automatically within the next couple of days).

Researching

During the past weekend Peter and I traveled to Orsa in north of Sweden (ok, maybe in the middle, but north of Stockholm at least ).

Besides attending a hunting fair and visiting the Orsa Bear Park we did some trekking with a local guide that took us out in the woods where we took quite some photos (for reference purposes), recorded some sounds and other things.

This is what you might call the planning stage of what will come after the pheasant release, so no holding your breath just yet.

Here are some photos by Peter...

Out of town

I'm currently in Cologne / Germany at the Gamescom trade fair. It wasn't the easiest thing to actually get an internet connection at the hotel I'm staying at, but finally I did and managed to post the Status Update (and spared me a clueless walk into town looking for a 24h internet café, cannot miss a Status Update). A day with lots of meetings, and more meetings tomorrow - the future of theHunter is exciting!

Next week we'll return to how the pheasant release is progressing.

The .300 and 30-06 are really nice at dropping animals, if they don't drop where they stand they don't make it far pretty much wherever you hit them.

weekly update

Archery Range
https://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af17/thehuntergame/Status%20Updates/archery_range.jpg
Our plans of reviving the shooting ranges now comes to the archery range. Here is a preview.

Next step in terms of competitions is to add archery competitions on the range, as a complement to the current hunting competitions.
When will the pheasant be released?

The pheasant is part of the next major content release, which beside additional equipment and features like the clay-pigeon range also features quite a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff to make your, and our as a developer, life easier.

As an example, we tested the new patch system on all the updates and patches released since the Logger's Point content release. The total size of all these patches were 378 MB, with the new patch system they ended up with a total of 10 MB. Quite a significant difference, don't you agree?

This will allow us to work more iteratively with many small updates instead of a few large ones. Responding faster to demands as well as being able to provide a constant stream of small additions with having you to download enormous files just because a new weapon was added.

We are targeting a release of the content update within a couple of months (being intentionally vague here). This Friday we will have a meeting where we go through the status of all the different parts of the update, prioritizing what is left and scope the features to determine what to release in the update and what to release in subsequent patches. Before we've actually started testing stuff outside of the development team we don't want to guess about more specific release dates.

Till next time, happy hunting!

Status Updates are weekly posts made in the community forum where the team share insights into the development of theHunter.

Welcome to this week's Status Update!

The team is focusing on the last parts of the pheasant and clay-pigeon shooting implementation. The plan is to go into a test phase by the end of this week and then do a couple of iterations to refine and nail the implementation and design.

While testing the development on the new patch system mentioned the previous week continues with an overhaul of the installer and improvements of the launcher. The benefit of existing users is of course that patches will be smaller and much smoother to automatically apply, but biggest benefit is that for completely new users the sign-up and installation process will be much simplier and easier. In the end one pieces of the puzzle to attract more users to the game.

By the time this is done the pheasant and clay-pigeon shooting, together with the rest of the changes and additions, is hopefully in a state where we feel it's ready. Then all bits and pieces are put together to enter a final testing phase. All together the plan is to release the content update in the second half of October.

Although focus is on getting the update out, some members of the team has already begun working on new stuff. Some in the near future after the content release, some more long-term.
TrackIR

I'm happy to say that we are partnering up with NaturalPoint and will bring TrackIR support to theHunter.

TrackIR will be released in it's own update after the content release and we will run some interesting events to promote TrackIR.

As part of the TrackIR update we will also bring support for free look.
Random antlers

Another important feature that is in the pipeline is a true random antler system with scoring that really match what you see in the game. Antlers will be procedurally created to provide both variation and different sizes, making an animal's antler truly unique, as opposite to the model based antler system that exist today.

We do know that this is probably the number one requested feature, and an important one.

Actually, a part of this system is used to make the pheasant tail feather available in an unlimited number of lengths, with scoring exactly matching what is visible in the game.
Lion's Outdoor Blog

Lion just started a blog over at the Outdoor Channel where he shares some thoughts about PC hunting game development to a non-gaming audience. Of course we hope this will result in maybe a few people finding out about the game.

Till next time, happy hunting!

Welcome to Wednesday and the Status Update!

We are working hard on finishing the last pieces of the upcoming update; everything from tweaking animation transitions of the pheasant to making sure the predator caller really sounds like a little innocent rabbit or... well.. something that would attract a predator, anyway.

Here is some quick beta footage of the bird put together. Please note that this is still work-in-progress and both animations, model and textures are not yet of the final release quality.

Last time I did some looking ahead after the pheasant release, mentioning the new random antler system as one of the features. Another important feature is...
Achievements

Achievements are an important part of a game, providing additional high level goals to achieve and compare with friends. I don't think the concept of achievements need any further introduction.

An achievement may be of the type "Harvest 10 elk bulls" or relate to a special event "Shoot your first flying turkey", or something to discover "Find the suspension bridge". Why not something extremely hard, "shoot your first pidgeon on the clay-pidgeon range using a slug"?

There is also the concept of hidden achievements that you first discover once you get them. There could be an achievement for certain humorous mistake "Shoot an animal and discover you forgot to bring ammunition". ;-)

Endless opportunities, indeed. What achievements would you like to see?
Poll

We are also running an Most Wanted Feature poll. And don't worry, we will run more polls.

Till next time, happy hunting!

Status Updates are weekly posts made in the community forum where the team share insights into the development of theHunter.

Welcome to the Wednesday Status Update.

While we're iterating between testing, fixing, tweaking and testing again of the pheasant, callers and other stuff we are just about to internally roll out a test of the new installation and patch system.

Beside a few minor things we will by the end of this week be in a state for this release you might call feature complete. Meaning that what is left is really fixing of bugs. Our earlier announced, intentionally vague, target of October as release date (in practice meaning last October ) may now be shifted closer to mid-October. If everything goes extremely smooth and no big issues appears it might even be earlier than that. We'll keep you updated.

From a distribution point of view this release is very important since it will allow us to release fixes, updates and new content a lot easier. This is not only inline with our plans, it's critical!

Some features will of course require more time than others, but between the large updates we will release smaller things and improvements. It might be new items (we know you got your favorites), weapons, client or web features, etc.

A steady flow of new content and features are critical for the game and the business model. We still got a few technical mountains to conquer, requiring a lot of effort to overcome. Things will be much easier once we're over but... that's not good enough. Only focusing on long-term goals will lead to nothing happening, only focusing on short-term goals and that mountain will soon be a brick wall.

The key is to do both. We will increase the team, so while some of us are climbing mountains others may run sprints. To what extent we'll see, but our first addition(s) will be starting in November.

At last in this Status Update I would like to highlight two members of our community who've gone the extra length to support the game. toddk from Denmark suggested he try to get in touch with the different Danish hunting magazines to see if they could write an article about the game. ReinierK contacted a large Dutch gaming site suggesting them to do a feature about theHunter, passing on my contact details and soon thereafter the editor-in-chief got back to schedule an interview.

This is invaluable to the success of the game. And success means we can develop more content and implement more features.

Is there anything you can do to spread the word?

Till next time, happy hunting!

Time for a Status Update!
Working on the update

The new installation and patch system is now being tested in preparation for the next release. We found some issues OS specific issues and have addressed them.

What's new with this system is that you will only have one version of the game, and that is the one that is patched. Compare that to the curreny system that stores all versions of the game. If you've played for a long time it does occupy some storage space (selecting Uninstall in the launcher allow you to remove old versions).

A little inconvenient but necessary, a full game download and install will be necessary when the update is released. The reason for this is that the state of all files in the current system is unpredictable, and thus cannot be patched. To make this is as smooth as possible we will make the update available for pre-load a couple of days before it is released.

All focus is now on fixes and getting rid of bugs to make this a polished release. The whiteboard is full of post-it notes in different colors and they are moved one by one from the left to the right side when fixed. When the left side is empty, then we're ready for release.
How do you hunt pheasants?

A very interesting aspect of hunting became obvious when designing the last aspects of the pheasants.

I might generalize somewhat, but in general pheasants are hunted in the air in Europe, while that is not always the case in the US. Our original thoughts on this matter was to simply just allow air shots, but after a lot of discussion internally and with some very knowledgeable hunters (and gamers) we realized this was no small decision.

The key is to stay true to how phesants are hunted in real life, which is a challenge itself because of the different cultures and traditions in this case, as well as to provide the new type of hunting experience shooting pheasants on the wing will be.

What becomes especially tricky is from a competitive and gameplay perspective, since it is a vastly different experience and challenge shooting pheasants on the ground versus in the air. It is notable harder shooting on a moving target. Also, shooting them on the ground is a similar style of hunting as turkeys, while the flush - shoot gameplay is something new. And it is this new aspect of hunting in the game we want to promote.

We reached out to the community in a forum post earlier to get some additional input and thoughts and based on that we've found a design that we think will make both the ground and air shooters happy as well as being the best for the game.

To sum it up, when trying to put down on paper what we want to achieve we got:

    * (1) Please both "hunting cultures" and personal preferences of ground and air hunting for pheasants
    * (2) Promote the competitive/challenging/sporting aspect of air pheasant hunting to introduce a significantly different hunting gameplay compared to existing animals
    * (3) Not introduce complexity in scoring or user interface and avoid ambiguous interpretation of how to compare results

And this is the new plan after much debating:

    * Allow for both ground and air shots (1)
    * Scoring is the same independently of way of harvesting (no multiplier) (1, 3)
    * Score is denoted with G or A depending on Ground or Air. (3)
    * Leaderboard will only show air shots (2, 3)
    * Competitions, missions and (upcoming) achievements will focus on air (2)

We are confident that this will achieve what we want. Of course we will also expand on this in further updates, for example we have more plans for the leaderboards.
Lion got a cub

Finally, congratulations to Lion, Mr. Community Manager, who this past weekend became father to a baby girl!

Since Lion is also the one who does all our trailers, videos and other promotional stuff I was left alone when doing some frapsing of the clay pigeon shooting range... so this is just a short clip, nothing fancy (and no sound). I know Lion got some cool stuff coming up...

Till next time... happy hunting!
