- What should be done with Software Patents?
Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, etc are all protections for intellectual property and serve the same general purpose. If the software were copyrighted instead of patented you would still need a license to use or reproduce it.ghettoperson wrote:

So we aren't that far apart. So maybe the issue for me is, there needs to be something to weed out the trolls (i.e. attempting to patent a 'buy now' feature).

How old are you? My dad was big in the foxpro development from about '93-'98.jsnipy wrote:

37, i started in 99. Vfp 5 and 6; had to support a couple older 2.6 apps. Not bad for the time, but i was glad to move on.
Yeah, he was pulling in six and a half figures for 2/3 a years work at his peak. Then they started outsourcing to India and asking him to work for $50k for a full years work. He quit and it's a good reason that he's the bum he is today.jsnipy wrote:

What the fuck does six and a half figures mean?
I'd assume a bad way to say 150k.
Yes. Americanism I guess.jord wrote:

Could you list the software patents that these games are covered by?JohnG@lt wrote:
That telnet game I linked, that was what internet games looked like in the early to mid 90s. Then some guy took the idea, put a graphical interface on it and released it as a profit seeking game called Ultima Online. This led to Everquest which led to World of Warcraft and a bunch of other online RPGs. There is no incentive to evolve without a profit motive.

I think his point is that very few if any games have patents on them.
wouldnt 6 and a half figures really be 750k?

It would if you were being literal. Maybe it's not an Americanism and instead a New York thing...eleven bravo wrote:

If you want to make a point, the onus sorta rests on you to back it up.JohnG@lt wrote:

Streamline and reform the patent office itself (it's pretty corrupt and outdated).
I'm not sure its all the Patent Office's problem...there are alot of patent trolls out there.Turquoise wrote:

There are companies that make no products...all they do is try to either buy the rights to or create exploitable patents and then make their money suing legitimate businesses.

I think jsnipy is talking about things like the infamous 1-click patent...
http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT5960411
If you read the patent documents, there isn't any source code. No way to 'change X+Y to Y+X'and avoid the patent, since none of that is included...just an abstract method for one-click shopping online. The question is--should that be patentable?
