Right, so I'm looking into upgrading my PC finally.

Currently (And for many years, now), I've been on:

E4400 (OC'd to 3GHz)
4GB 6400 RAM
Gigabyte DS4 SLI MoBo
9600GT
Zalman 460W PSU
Cooler Master HAF

Now, I've recently spec'd this out:

https://img706.imageshack.us/img706/2839/20100907190644clipboard.png

CPU
RAM
MoBo
GPU
HDD
PSU
CPU Cooler

A few notes to take into consideration:

I already have a case and hard drives, etc.
I still only run at 1280 x 1024. A monitor isn't a high priority for me, I'm happy with my 3 non-widescreens.
Budget is MAX £1000. No more without a really, really good reason.

Now, a few questions:

That SSD. Best in that price range? Not too sure on SSDs, but I know I want one.
Is that PSU gonna be enough? In my case, I have a second PSU that powers most of my good case fans, lights, etc. So it will only be used for core components and hard drives.

So, how's it look?

Wait for the new SSD's, coming out at the end of the year.
I love your CPU cooler

New SSD's, you say? Any information on these? I will be buying within the next day or two, so it'd have to be worth me waiting.

A nice monitor would be much better than an SSD imo.

E: aside from that perfect build.

Hmm... It's either SSD or monitor...

What monitors would you recommend for the same price as the SSD (£160ish)?

Ahh, seems the RAM won't fit.

Nice find.

Now, do I replace the cooler or the RAM? The cooler is out of stock, atm, so... Ideas?

It's limiting my RAM choices. That RAM is good for that price and spec...

looks like a pretty decent build.

now, the £1000-question:

what are you gonna use that hardware for?

Opinions on these Corsair H50 CPU Coolers?

Seems it gets good reviews, but seems a bit of a cheapy WC method to me. Also, maintenance..?

H50 is a touch overpriced, but is really good.

As far as monitors go I'll get back to you.

Little warning, I doubt that Noctua will fit with those high profile rams. Wait someone mentioned that already, well Megahalems is pretty much equally good with 2 decent fans, fits with tall rams and performs better than the H50 too.

What MoBo is that? I think my choice of MoBo has RAM slots closer to the CPU, so even that may not help.

Ok, decided to change my RAM.

What's better, out of these two?

Corsair XMS3 DDR3 16000 20000MHz 9-9-9-24 1.65V

or

Kingston HyperX DDR3 12800 1600MHz 7-7-7-24 1.65V

I'm not sure whether speed > timings. I'd assume speed, though.

Also, monitor look good: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =MO-133-SA ?

Or LED backlit... http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … amp;tool=3

I got the samsung p2450 from ebuyer for £160 a few months back. Very happy with it, but I think the price has gone up now.

Out of those two I'd go for the kingston, 1600mhz is more than enough and the tighter timings are IMO easier to 'feel'.

If you're gonna go for solely computing use, 1920x1200 is better. 1080 is for consoles.

I will use my 360 (for once) for it.

Halo Reach soon

Are Asus loosing ground? ... I've read many comments about the latest MoBos having bad design and bios problems etc etc

Well I've had a Gigabyte MoBo for a few years and it's never let me down. At the time of choosing, it was between that and a similar ASUS one, both the same price, but the ASUS had less USB/SATA ports, but it did have 8-channel audio. I'm more likely to gain from the ports than the audio, though, so I went with the Gigabyte.

One last question:

My GPU choice (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =GX-064-GI) is now being swayed by this card that's just come on offer:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =GX-003-PL

It has 15Mhz less on Core clock and 30 less on shader clock, but twice as much memory. Can't find a review, though. Would double the memory give me any useful benefits with the rest of my setup?

Also worth noting, the Gigabyte one has a better cooler.

E: Nevermind. The higher memory will only help for higher resolutions, and I'll only be on 1920 x 1080.

Was looking at the similar Asus one also ... one comment was that if you had a newer GPU with a big cooler there wasn't room for two GPUs because the slots was too close ... if that's the case it pretty aweful design ...

Am currently looking at upgrading with ...

i7-930 - 1366
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
6GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz (3x2 sticks)

About £500 in Norway

that be impossible unless they were in the slots right next to each other cause they couldnt fit in a normal case. Unless your talking about some of the custom coolers on cards that take up more then 2 slots in that case none of them could be slied xfireed.
