there's no difference between the small batshit insane cults we have today and the multitude of small batshit cults they had back then.
the only difference is that a few of them hit the bigtime and became institutionalized with political-favour and, in turn, power.
The reason for starting a cult, sect or religion haven't changed I agree ... but I don't think level of stupidity has changed much either ...
People are far more skepital and cynical nowadays, what with freedom of speech and modern media.
Questioning religion or being a heathen has gone from being lynched and punishable by death, to being looked down upon by the majority and shunned, to being more accepted, to being completely accepted and growing in numbers with every generation.
That explains why less people are religious today but then again we are back to the point of what kind of people joins a sect or a cult ... if your thesis is correct it would mean people are actually in these enlightened times more stupid to join than they were 2000 years ago while normal religion attracts less people ...
Or do you think that in earlier times they trusted their educated much more seeing as there were so few of them ... so if an educated "priest" said the volcano erupted because it was Gods will he was more likely to be believed than a similar incident today ...
Again I stress the point that lack of education doesn't default being stupid ...
