I believe my 8800GT is slowly biting the dust. Over the last few days it has frozen up during Starcraft, but not extremely consistently. It will play for some long spurts, at other times (such as just now) it failed 10 minutes into the first game. There is a flurry of pretty colors across the screen and then my computer locks up and requires a soft reset. I think temps are at least part of the issue - earlier this summer I installed new drivers and that reset my altered fan speed, and I started having heat problems when playing games. In that case though, the artifacting was a bunch of red pixels across the screen and the computer never actually locked up. Recently I have been upping the fan speed and such and I think it has made a difference, but just now the video card was at 72 degrees when I locked up...hot but not excessively so.

Unless someone is aware of problems with SC2 it looks like I need a new video card, looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102834

tl;dr: my card's performance looks to be terminally degrading and I want suggestions for a new card

If you're just going to be playing SC2 then the card you linked will suffice.

Either buy Bevos or get a GTX 460. 4850 would be a huge drop in horsepower, and the 460 is the best price/performance card out today.

No.. He means the 4850 would be better than his current 8800GT, not Bevos 9800GTX+.. which is basically a rebranded 8800GTX anyway.

1) Can anyone actually justify a 460 regardless of price considering the games actually on the market right now?

2) "4850 would be a huge drop in horsepower" unless that was mis-worded this is nonsense.

3) I am not going to spend a lot of money. Especially not because this would be going into a 680i/e6750.

It'll run anything out, and anything for a good while. I assume you didn't need the 8800GT when you bought it, you coulda bought something cheaper. I only suggested it because it's a great card at a great price, you'll not need anything for a good few years.

I was mistaken, I misread and though you said you had a 8800GTX, which would be a fair whack better than a 4850.

Well other specs would have helped in the OP, I agree an E6750 is nothing to shout about, you'd probably be best with the 4850 or at the most a 4870. Anything above isn't going to utilize the extra performance well enough, until you upgrade. But then when you do end up upgrading you'll need to buy another GPU..

When I bought the 8800GT it was a huge boon, it let me play Company of Heroes well (not shit really low settings and not lagging on every arty strike) and it let me play HL2:EP2 without going into single digit FPS whenever I turned my flashlight on in the ant-lion tunnels. It also meant I could actually turn my BF2 settings to max, unlike with the allegedly BF2 "recommended" 6800GT. These days I can play anything but Crysis well with medium settings at least, and frankly I don't know of a game on the horizon that is going to change that. To some degree this is more of a compliment to the engines of games like Starcraft 2 and CoD4 than anything, but even so. Until we see some specs on something like BF3 I am pretty content with what I have.

Until it starts breaking.

Anyways thanks, I guess I was just looking for a second opinion.

I played WIC on my 8800GT with no problems, I dunno about three tactical nukes though haha. Pretty fun game but I never got into multiplayer.

I had problems with my 9800GT where it'd glitch and lock up like you're saying.  XFX replaced it with a HD 5670, and so far this thing has been pretty good - slightly better in raw performance to the 9800GT.  It also runs a lot a cooler, doesn't need a dedicated PCI power plug, and supports DX11.
