Well, not really a story, but I couldn't help but hear the conversation at the next table. Old dude, probably 70 years old or so, was sitting at dinner talking up a storm with a guy that I assume was his son. The old dude was going on and on and on about a water tower they are tearing down in his hometown and how he's upset because the posting for the public meeting to discuss it was held in secret (the posting was listed in the state capital's newspaper ) and he didn't get a chance to voice his concerns or give his opinion. He was really riled up about this and was saying how he was going to write his Senator and call Albany (the capital) and get the State Attorney General to look into the matter. He's pissed because it was decided that the people that live in the town will pay for it's demolition.

So after about a half hour of his harangue his son asks him how much it will cost to tear down this water tower... $200,000. He's bitching about $200k, thinks it's unfair to spread the cost among the 4200 households that live in the town and use the water tower. Yes my friends, he is so irate about having to pay less than $50 extra in property taxes next year that he plans on complaining to whoever he can in order to get the cost spread around among a larger population, a population which sees no benefit from the tower to begin with...

Thankfully his revelation came as I was finishing my meal because I would've embarrassed him in front of his son if I was forced to listen to his bitching any longer. Why do people bitch about everything? I just don't get it.

Well, you're bitching about that...

Anyway, it's a last straw kind of reactionary thing. The old dude in question probably already feels that the government's imposed itself on his life too many times.

People like to bitch, and old people have nothing better to do than find things to bitch about.

he's old, that is what old people do.  They bitch and whine and complain about everything.  Most old people are demented and paranoid and, of course, completely out of touch with reality, or at least modern reality.

Which makes it even better that the retired are about to outnumber working aged people. Can't wait to see what they demand for their collective votes in the next twenty years.

The word 'retirement' means very little to me. I probably won't see a single penny from the feds for it. Let the leeches leech while they can, I guess.

Seriously, the difference between people when they're working and a couple years into retirement is terrifying. I'd rather be like one of those old guys in their 90's who can still sling a bunch of weight over their shoulders because they've never stopped doing it.

I guarantee they're gunna bleed social security dry.  I doubt I'll ever see a dime of the SS I pay for.  My retirement plans don't include anything from the government.

fuckin' old people.

And here I thought the 'me generation' was the 70's and beyond. Still, better than being called a baby boomer or associated with the haughtily-titled 'greatest generation.'

They're the same people that bitched and moaned about taxes for the past thirty years and drove every single tax cut. Now they're going to milk the government for every dime they can (and didn't even pay for while they were working).

The baby boomer/hippie generation will go down as the most selfish and self serving generation in the history of this country.

I remember that. I thought the guy was kind of a dick for asking his kid questions and interrupting before he could give an answer.

For an old person $50 is a lot of money, especially when you are living off retirement.

*edit:
$50 is a lot of money to me.

Isn't it standard American etiquette to bitch about the government stealing your money?

Well we were formed because the English were stealing our money, then we slowly moved towards the government stealing our money.

Oh well.

I'd be bitching about how it's going to cost 200k to tear down a water tower.. Shit man there are people who'd tear that shit down for free, just for the scrap.

We spent £30 million destroying our cluster munitions, we could have sold them to the many countries that still use them, including america.

Taxes are always going to be squandered, but what can ya do?

who doesnt like to bitch... the thing is you have to take the next step and do something about it... instead of complaining... which is usually not the case (with most people)....
