While I'm not a trasher, or extreme recycler, I made a discovery of something while taking out my garbage. Someone threw away an OLD (1995) P5-90 Gateway. Full Tower Chassis. Still had the old computer in it.
I may do something with the old computer, but it had a really nasty old style AT power supply and I don't want to electrocute myself screwing around with it.
Anyway, on to the demonization.
Highlights:
1) I did a line up test with an ATX Mobo that I had laying around that didn't work. I have to remove 6 mount screws (3 under the board area) and the 3 from where the old AT board layed horizontal.
Other than that the board lines up perfectly and does not go over the top of the motherboard tray.
I have to drill 3 more mounting holes to get all the securing points on the board ready to go.
2) old mobo tray will be removeable once I drill out the rivets.
3) old mobo tray has 4 large squares in it that will seat 80MM fans nicely!
4) Harddrive Cage is attached to the BACK of the system and can be mounted virtually anywhere.
5) Internal frame of the chassis stands on it's own (no need for the square shaped shell)
6) PLENTY of room for 120mm fans where ever I'd want them.
Problems
1) The old construction material may be a little tough to cut. How tough? I can stand on the internal frame and it won't buckle. I weigh 225 pounds (unknown in Kilos or how many "stone" that is). I did get my overhead lightbulbs changed however.
2)Power Supply can't have a fan out the back. Only up top. Back must be vented.
I guess the question now is if it's beneficial to me to mount 4 80's to the spaces in the old mobo tray?
I can do porthole cuts on the top for the power supply fan and my 120MM top exhaust.
Also wondering if I should run it in just the frame or subistute with plexiglass pieces with portholes cut in. I may drill grids into the plexiglass to facilitate airflow.
Thinking about mounting harddrive cage Vertically on the BACK SIDE. Then drives are exposed to direct cooling.
I could watercool this system and make it handy to take to lan parties, but I don't know that many coputer geeks to have a lan party and I really only play BF2 and my friends and I play together any time we're all on.
I'm really beginning to hate my 1st Gen Lanboy case. That aluminum causes more problems than it solves.
On the upside, it was butter to take a hole saw to and during the winter months with no snow and a creative ducting system from a nearby window, I could get the processor to operate at about 101F under load, and the system temperature to be at 40-60 degrees.
(to do this I got a sheet of plexiglass, put a vent tube into it, closed up the case and sealed it so it was mostly airtight and then put a loop in the vent hose running from the window to the case (via the fan port) and the loop kept it from letting water into the system. )
But I want something a little more practical than having to use the house AC unit and BF Cold from outside to do heavy duty cooling.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.
