The guy who runs this site paid the fee for a FOIA request to get the entire database of pistol permit holders in NYS and published it online.  While that is technically allowed, I don't think the addresses should be included.

The irony is that the guy who runs the site used private registration for his domain.  I guess he thinks some information should be private--his own.

What do you guys think about this and the mass dissemination of personal information for something like firearm ownership?  I suppose I'm a little surprised that someone only needs to request the entire list, and not just a specific record on it.  Can someone FOIA the DMV for a complete list of names, addresses, and cars for the entire state also?

I think the irritating part about it is that the guy who did it has such a self-righteous attitude while hiding his own identity completely.

to add it's no particular business of his who has (legal i add) firearms. Hypothetically if one of these houses gets robbed and said firearms are taken, could the website owner be liable in part?

Does that mean I can make a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request to get the entire database of New York Drivers License owners?

Probably not because the criminal could have just FOIA'ed the state themselves...that's why I don't think addresses should be released to the public.

I have no idea...but I wonder if one request can reveal this entire list, complete with addresses...

I'm sure the public outcry after something like that would be far greater, instead of some people just passing it off as 'gun-toting nuts' complaining.

Site seems to have been shut down and the guy is obviously unhinged.

There's this fat jew of a New York City lawyer that frequents another message board that I write on and his entire contribution to the forum is posting a series called "The reality of guns in the city" where he copies and pastes news stories where guns are involved. Of course, hand guns have been banned in NYC for years now yet he still has plenty of articles to paste. What's more banned than banned? The ban obviously had no real impact and should rightly be considered a total failure, especially since all it really does is keep weapons out of the hands of law abiding citizens who would 99% of the time use them simply for home defense. I don't get it.

He is precisely who this satirical cover was aimed at too:

The guy is obviously unhinged, but the list is still there so the site is functioning as designed.

It's public information, my brother looked up the gun owners in our area a few years ago.

The guy has every right to publish this, the government posts it on the internet already.

I think it would be pretty stupid to rob somebody's house when they own a weapon. Unless you're 100% sure this guy isn't home or his family then you're basically pretty stupid.

good, so every bad guy has a list of houses NOT to invade for fear of getting shot. They now know where to go for easy pickings, the houses that deplore guns and champion the rights of criminals.

Do you guys not have a version of or something similar to the data protection act?

Personal data like this shouldn't be able to be accessed freely.

The guy doesn't have every right to publish such information.  It is an intrusion into the private lives of citizens and can be used as a database for criminals looking to illegally obtain firearms through burglaries.  This guy is a dickbag and also a coward as he didn't post is own address.  That state dropped the ball.

Florida dealt with a jackass just like him a few years back & yes my name and address was on a list floating about the internets.  I watched the legislature pass a bill outlawing such moronic activity...  The shit nowadays people think they have "a right to" makes me laugh.

Agreed, although the U.K.'s legal system is even crazier -- especially with regard to libel laws and corporate injunctions against the media.

Reminds me of that whack-a-mole game.  I haven't seen a piece of legislation that doesn't have unintended consequences.

On the other hand they now know which houses have guns in them and so know where to go if they want to steal a gun.

Which is exactly why this list should not be in the public domain.

Censored press is still censored.  As for corporate injunctions, those have plenty to gain.

The point is...  The American legal system is far too idealistic, whereas the U.K. system is far too corporatist.
