have you ever used the trackpad on a macbook? they're fucking amazing. so many more features and so much easier to use than a mouse. above is an ergonomic example, also... mice need tracking space to operate in. this thing sits at 80%+ the size of an ordinary trackpad, which puts it smaller than a mousemat. the functions of the magic trackpad being ported from macbooks here to windows/osx desktops are PERFECT for people in journalism, office-work, and even things like reading ebooks and just browsing the web. it is far simpler, more smooth and more effective.

Hmm, I find trackpads irritating, mac or otherwise (yes, I've used them before you all rant).  I wouldnt use this but I guess there are people who could find a use for it.

My mouse doesnt really need "tracking space".  It works perfectly fine on anything, bed covers, wood, carpet, leather, even clear glass.

I am considering picking up one of those trackpads for my HTPC. I've been looking for a decent way to control it from the couch. Too bad all the fancy multi finger gestures don't work with windows yet. Need to wait for a decent driver

Waste is such a relative term.   Maybe he wants to game on a 30+ inch with resolution beyond 1920x1200 resolution.  Perhaps even 3 screen gaming.

i happen to know that james has 2 standard widescreens and also happen to know he isn't a sad geek trying to play FSX with 30Gb of texture and graphics plug-ins.

'relative' is an important term, indeed. a term that seems to go out the window on tech-penis benchmark overclockers.

You, talking to people about wasting money.

Oh, the irony.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

dude i have a pc i built in 2007 and im playing games released yesterday on ultra settings and fine FPS.

i do not waste money on gaming equipment.

any other point you have to make is pretty fucking irrelevant in a tech thread.

Uzi, did you just argue with yourself?!

I bought it for one reason: it was £130 second hand from the overclockers forum.

If I like it, if it has noticeable improvements in games, I keep it.

If not, I whack it on ebay, make a profit.

At 1920x1200 I can't play BC2 on all high without some lag. This solves the problem.

That cool?

how did i just argue with myself? did i miss something? i said it's pretty ineffective spending -- i haven't made any myself.

i suppose you estimate your own value for things but, personally, i wouldn't pay £100+ for something (even if it was on a sale) in order to play utterly-shite games at a marginally, barely-noticeable quality increase. same logic if £100+ of equipment gives me a 5-10fps boost. to me, that's pointless tech e-peen. can't hate on you for making an enthusiastic purchase and all... hence my first post being tongue-in-cheek: just what exactly are you going to use it for and milk the frames for? BC2 on high? would rather spend £130 on an economy-class flight to kenya to catch AIDS than spend-out to increase my 'experience' of Bad Company 2.

A PC built in 07 won't play today's games on max settings. No DX11 for one

Yeah, you make a fair point and I do agree with you when you put it that way...

tbh I've always wanted to have SLI, purely for my own satisfaction, with SLI being mandatory for a 'real' 'hi-end' computer. I know it's not worth it, price for performance increase but meh, I seized the opportunity to get a great price.

Yeah, I know your first post was tounge in cheek, the post after Ilocano's could kinda be read like you were arguing against what you initially said.

sc2 doesn't have dx11 and games with optional dx11 don't 'need' it to be played, either.

that is the only time that one feels 'forced' to update technology - at significant points. e.g. single-core to multi-core processing, DDR->DDR2->DDR3, and i suppose soon standard magnetic hard-drives to solid-state. the increase in directX's are also like this, but to a lesser degree-- as time goes on, and games seem to be getting worse and worse, the hardware-leaps seem to matter less and less. thus when dx10 came out with lots of bright-faced games and talks of physics and hdr and all this great stuff, people upgraded. dx11 seems to bring... less. or at least, less exciting, want-able things. or, perhaps even at least again, games that integrate these technologies into desireable products.

most of gamers seem to still be playing games that are 2-3 years old and pre-date their hardware. they're happy and fine with it. naturally, this being a gaming forum and james being a gamer, i wonder why one needs 285GTX's in SLI-- but he answered that. the same reason i built this 8800GTX SLI machine at a time when all i would be playing was world of warcraft and call of duty 4. to have SLI, better described in my first post as 'pointless tech e-peen', i.e. not value for money, i.e. a waste.

Oh I agree. DX11 is hardly a necessary feature. I'm stuck on DX10 hardware and have no intention of upgrading. Hell my most played game atm is HoI II. That thing isn't even 3D.

the gaming, rather than the purely tech factor, was the basis for my comment, anyway .

you can have quad-SLI of the latest card and you're still going to ultimately find yourself playing the last decent game from 2007.

what. the. fuck. I finally got my new speakers. I connected them all up and plugged them in and they were working.... they would turn on but I couldn't get any sound from my computer... I checked all the cables were connected properly (I'm a noob with these sorts of things so i'm not 100% certain they are) and then I noticed smoke coming out the top of the control box and the smell of burning plastic.... HELP???!??!
