Young employees entering the workforce approach it differently than those before; unsatisfied, demonstrate less loyalty, and put personal priorities above work.
So its all about "me" for the most recent generation that is coming into the workforce.  A whole generation with Helicopter parents, making reports of yourself instead of heros and astrunauts, facebooking texting tweeting everything about you, and raised with unrealistic expectations on hard work and accomplishment.

No longer taking score at a game because it might make people feel bad.  Getting meaningless A's on drivel.  Lowering standards because someone might not pass and would feel bad about themselves.

So what do we do? We annoy the older generations in the workplace by our constant need for feedback (self-centered since the All About Me report that earned an A+), aspirations for the corner office (because we are special--Mr. Rogers says so) and an unrealistic idea of the work and time involved (because it happens in the space of two hours in Rudy). And we're not happy about any of it, because until this point we truly believed we were going to be the next Lance Armstrong. Why? Because you said so.

So what's the solution.  How do you deal with Generation Me in the workplace?

Laziness: Realize that these GenMe's aren't lazy, they have priority that full fill them outside of the job they were hired to do.  They view a job as a paycheck and not as a career.  They view is as a mechanism that they use to full fill their aspirations to boat, ski, surf, exercise, etc.

Lack of loyalty: They will jump ship once their job gets in the way of their personal goals.  You will see this by notcing a history of short-live jobs.  Following up on their last jobs is a must because if you really found out the reason it probably because the job started cutting into their "Me" time instead of them being under performing.

Unrealistic Aspirations: Many of those green-nosed gimps will come out of college expecting to get a corner office and be partner of the firm in 5 years of "hard work".  You'll have to sit them down and explain that that's not how it works and for them to be more realistic with their goals.  Don't shoot them down a run on the ladder, but rather show them they can progress with real work over time if they prove themselves - make it clear they shouldn't expect promotions.

Constant need for feedback: Acknowledge their strengths and gently point out their weaknesses.  This is something they probably aren't accustomed to since growing up with getting an `A for any effort`.  You don't have to do this all the time, but its definitely something GenMe expects more often than previous generations so be cognizant of that.

All in all, your older employees will have issues with the newest generation.  A rift will occur and you'll have manage it.

Good luck.

Soooooo thankful my parents didn't raise me this way. I should put it in my resume that I'm not one of these twerps.

Actually, one thing I need to get going on is visiting various companies in my job search and meeting them face-to-face. Prove to them I'm not a self-important prick.

Then again, these overly-motivated youngsters are the ones getting the jobs I'm after

I had a couple of newly hired tits (fresh out of school) texting while i was training them, it freakin pissed me off i had them turn off their cell phones. they lasted less than a year and found "bigger and better" jobs.

Thanks for dredging up some past forgotten memories

TBH if I can get a better job after working somewhere for a year I'm obviously going to take it. That's not to say I'm not going to work my ass off for whoever is employing me at the time though.

On the one hand its about time the pendulum swung a little away from companies to the individual.

On the other trying to manage people who think they deserve a salary for sending text messages, surfing the net, listening to their ipod and chatting is not a joke.

I always find it hilarious that the generation that 'tuned in, turned on, dropped out' considers mine to be self entitled and selfish. I see people my age dropping out of life all the time but then I think back and our parents did the same thing. Smoking weed all day, going to concerts, etc (Summer of Love, Woodstock) this is what they did until they decided it was time to go to work. The hippies turned into yuppies.

They spit in the face of their parents and rebelled against the Beaver Cleaver lifestyle. Now people in my generation are rebelling against parents who tried so very hard to live vicariously through them.

Always reminds me of the old PSA where the dad catches the kid smoking weed and the kid says "I learned it by watching you dad!". I'd youtube the video but I'm on ultra crappy wireless at the beach

Generation "me"? That seems fair, unless you have kids you're going to put yourself first surely? You get one life, you're not going to live it to satisfy someone else are you...

Silly buzzword.

Yes, and they're always the ones to take the long lunches, 'business trips' and rape the company through bonuses and stock options.

Yep, our parents basically fucked SS up by not paying a reasonable amount in taxes, and now, our generation has to pay into a system that won't even exist when we get old.

As far as I'm concerned, they can go fuck themselves.

You know its a Ponzi scheme? What they paid in doesn't matter, its not as if it was invested in anything.

It matters to the extent that funds are doled out according to what is paid.  Our SS system is a little strange in that what you are paid out later in life isn't actually tied directly to actual invested funds but rather to what the government assumes it owes you for paying a certain amount from payroll tax.  This is why chunks of the actual funds are often whisked away into pet projects.

In the end, what this means is that what SS will pay out to our parents is likely to be less than what it really needs to be for reasonable living expenses.  This will likely result in a lot of supplemental funding being paid out through welfare and budgetary increases that incur deficit spending.

It's not a true Ponzi scheme, but it certainly resembles one.
