A few days ago, on the news, a story came up. In Chevon (Or a similar name) lake, a man and a woman took their boat to a friends party. They docked it and everything. Eventually, they decided to leave. They drank about 8-10 cans of beer while on the boat, as were discovered when police salvaged the boat. Neither the man or the woman wore life jackets. They drove through 1 or 2 docks (sideways) before grinding to a halt. The man died (started to drown, was pulled clear but died on shore I think), and I can't remember what happened to the woman. For some reason, no friend raised a finger to stop them when they left the party wearing no life jackets.

Maybe, what if we designed special lifejackets? Each life jacket or PFD has three buckles. We can put a laser sensor inside each buckle. Untile every life jacket on board has their straps on, the boat will refuse to start. If a person removes one or two straps while on the boat, it will continue to run, but if they take off their life jacket, the bpat can notify the driver. The same could apply to seat belts. Even better, if the seat belt was unbuckled for too long while driving, it could notify the police.

If they don't want to wear lifejackets, let them drown.

If they operate a boat while trashed, let them drown.

Same goes for seatbelts/cars.

No. A two minute act of stupidity isnt enough to condemn a person making perfectly smart decisions their whole life to death.

A laser sensor inside each buckle on a life jacket coupled with some kind of notification device to automatically shut of a boat's engine (or similar) ... ? That's not even remotely realistic. wtf.

It is if the resulting mistake takes someone else life.

Very good point. However, the people whose lives were saved by the above lifejacket-sensor idea would still be punished severely, which could teach them the consequences of their actions, or get their boat confiscated.

sure it is. from the story in the OP, it doesn't sound like it was a first time drunken boating expedition (although you don't cite a source to the story).

the government does not exist to protect people from themselves. and you can't legislate away ignorance.

Tbh, the better idea would be to put mandatory breathalyzers on the boats, not stupid sci-fi laser beam seatbelt detectors, that way the stupid people can drown themselves, and the drunk can go do something else without harming others.

That said, the public does not often respond well to "mandatory" anythings.

Why should it be up to the government to stop people killing themselves?

there is not a government in the world big enough to prevent accidents and/or ignorance.

It's completely up to the indivudual, who are you to dictate how safe someone should be?

Perhaps mandatory lasers fixed to peoples skulls that interact with sensors at road junctions to ensure people look both ways twice, and if they don't they get an electric shock.

Or hows about if people wanna not be cautious then let them, their choice.

What's to stop the people just buckling up the lifejackets whilst not wearing them?

Your idea is impractical.

no, if they don't want to, it's their problem...

thing is, if they're making choices that endanger other people, such as DUI/DWI, then they should be held responsible for their stupidity causing property damage/loss.

Or...just start the boat sober and let it idle while you drink.  That's how people get around breathalyzers in cars nowadays.

And regarding this thread, burnzz said it with "You can't lesgislate away ignorance".  That's it, really.

People should be allowed to kill themselves through accidents or neglect.  If this endangers other people not involved in their decisions, those people or their relatives can sue or press charges.

Just let people do as they will, and already existing laws take care of the repercussions.

Electrical sensors work just fine, no need for lasers....

You can't 100% prevent people harming themselves, just do your best to do so and minimise the harm they do to yourself and 3rd parties.
No matter what systems you put in place someone will defeat them - never underestimate the ingenuity of idiots.
