... for the first time in my life
So yesterday evening, somehow or another, the conversation steered towards my parents' generation of music and then onto the music that they have on vinyl records. Then it occurred to me, I have never, ever heard a vinyl being played. And if I have, I have certainly never operated a turntable myself.
This afternoon I decided to see if I could find their vinyl records and a means to play them. Sure enough, in the loft (attic) was a reasonably old, but not that old, hi-fi system with a turntable on it and a couple of boxes of records. My mum said that dad has some pretty rare ones, that might well be worth a lot of money - though I'm not entirely sure which ones.
I dusted it all off, found some speakers and the necessary cables and plugged it in.
It worked! So I flicked through the sleeves. Plenty of things that I recognised, some that I didn't. Lots of Cliff Richard (presumably my mum's?), The Beatles, and Queen. There was also a load of stuff that I had no idea my dad listened to - that I have listened to, and enjoy. He has quite a lot of electronic music.
Here's a couple of pictures of the records that caught my eye.
This may not interest anyone, but I find it all pretty fascinating. This fact might even suprise some of you older ones, or indeed, some of you more "experienced" with music. The whole thing of taking the record out of it's sleeve, slotting it on to the turntable and putting the arm & needle to the start of the record and hitting play is just exciting in every way. Then when it plays there's some crackles and pops and all of a sudden this crisp sounding music appears out of nowhere. Magic!
Anyone else got a collection of vinyls? Does anyone here actually listen to them? (Or even have a means to play them?)
I hope I inspire some people to go see if their parents have any vinyl and/or a record player.
Gonna spend the afternoon listening to music the way old people used to listen to it. Shame it doesn't scrobble, eh?
