But you're the slave to the 'weird nerdy kid with a mustache and no friends trend'. I prefer phone trends.

At least that's cheap.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I heard it was dropping calls a lot though, not just the signal bar changing? Is that what Apple PR are telling you? So now it'll have the same problems, just the device won't tell you that it's about to drop the call. Great!
It's the conclusion Apple's R&D department has reached, which is completely in line with independent studies into this, like the one conducted by Anandtech.

i was gonna buy one but im holding off until they release a revised model or a sufficient firmware patch to sort it (if that is a possible solution). no way am i dropping £600 to buy it out for pay-as-you-go when the thing has an inherent design flaw. the first hiccup ive seen from apple from a range of devices and gadgets that have normally always had a sleek and professional, almost-flawless finish.

I bought my iPhone 3G in July '08.

Since then there has not been a single phone that's perked my interest nearly as much as the iPhone brand. The Droid Incredible was the closest, but even then it didn't even come even moderately close to the iPhone for me.

And it's not like I'm an Apple fanboy either... I've been a PC user since birth, I've been on a Mac maybe 4 hours out of my life (although I might be buying one for college). The phone is just fantastic.

This flaw aside, when it's fixed, it will be the best phone on the market. The haters can hate and the doubters can doubt, the but iPhone won yet again.

I think if you have a 3GS, there really is no sense in upgrading. I would say this phone is more for the people still using the original iPhone and the 3G. Nonetheless, I still wouldn't consider jumping on as a new customer until Apple releases a proper 4G/LTE phone to the market... all you're getting with the new iPhone 4 is an operating system upgrade and a new case. Not really much else on offer here that I have seen. iOS4 is one very nice OS, though. Finally on par with Android 1.6.

I am happy with my 3gs. I have no need for video nor would I have a use for video calling. More space would be nice which would be the only thing to get me to upgrade. I will wait until my phone breaks before I get a new one.

something like 60% of iphone 4 sales were upgrades/previous customers.

although i do agree the 3GS is still a very respectable competitor/cheaper option.

Uzi, that's because the vast majority of consumers (this goes for everyone) do not really know what they are buying when they buy something technological like a phone or a computer. Sheepeeple. It isn't just Apple customers.

Once Apple brings out a proper 4G/LTE phone, then I'd consider switching from Android. Till then, there isn't any reason.

android 2.2 geeks miss the plain and simple fact that 99% of mobile phone users don't care about such small differences.

Yeyeyey I know, which is why (most) android geeks wouldn't mention it to 99% of mobile phone users.

But the ones who start touting their iphone's unrivalled  awesomeness get it.

you miss the point by a small country mile.

people perceive the iphone to be 'awesome' because of its sleek design, its ease-of-use and its ability to serve all (casual) purposes.

the 99% of mobile phone consumers that buy an iphone and say it is better than all the competitors say so because it IS better than all the competitors for them. they don't care that java loads slower or that battery life is 5% shorter or what-the-fuck-ever. it's quite surprising that people involved in the computing or tech industry can't even understand the basic psychology of most consumers.

I understand your point but I'm talking about TECHIE people who are talking about it's properties, people who know shit about shit.

I fully appreciate how good the iphone is for casual consumers. And how it is miles better than android for that. I just didn't phrase what I meant properly...

to what extent is there a 'point' in being a smart-phone nerd, anyway. it sounds like the most petty-pedantic interest imaginable.

i spend about 15 minutes on my phone, per day, total. it makes calls. it texts. it can browse and use apps.

the rest i don't care about and people that get little tech hard-ons over those details are... well, lets just say 1-0 to the computer-hardware geeks.

There's no 'point' in being overly interested in anything. But that's exactly what it is, and interest, a hobbie.

Everyone has their quirks, something that they enjoy.

I'm into smartphones and tech in general but I'm doing ok. I don't let it take over my life and I don't push it upon others. That works for me.
