Well, a little bit of everything, like thinking too much and fucking up when there's other cars around, figuring out how to turn tightly enough not to hit stuff, remembering to put my blinker on when switching lanes, etc.

Mostly I think it's because I'm thinking way too much, just like the girl problems.

It's about confidence but also about being able to judge speed, distances, turning angles etc. Anyone can get behind a wheel and accelerate and make the vehicle move. It takes a lot of driving time to be able to do it intuitively, to know how much time and distance it will take to slow down or stop, and this all changes if you get into a car you're not familiar with.

Alright J, judging my your most recent post all I can say is you need to practice and most importantly: RELAX!

Eventually signaling, parking, turning, running cats over, etc. becomes second nature and you don't have to think about it as much as you need to at first. I've heard the average time it takes to feel at ease with one's vehicle is between 30 and 60 hours. If it takes you more or less time don't worry about it. Just don't RUSH yourself and not be ready, you might kill somebody because of your mistake.

And above your tomb, the stars will belong to us.

Well that's what spatial awareness is; not being able to see the entire car, but still knowing where it is in space. I can't see the back bumper of my car but I know when I'm about to back into something or about how much space I have to back up with.

It's literally practice. And confidence.
Once people pass, the almost always without exception start driving more sloppily, it WILL happen. I'd probably fail if an instructor drove with me now, but I've been driving for 2 years and never had an incident.

It's about understanding limitations - limitations of the vehicle, the road, the weather, other drivers (which can be hard to gauge hence why you need to always err on the side of caution) and making decisions within these limitations and without hesitation. I've had more near misses due to other hesitant drivers than I have with those who drive like idiots, but the latter are more dangerous if something goes wrong.

Back when I took driving lessons, one kid in the class was pretty wierd. He seemed to be able to drive around a parking lot fine (no cars around), but as soon as he got on a road, he'd start swerving from side to side and panicked.

I can't say I've ever felt like that, but it's really all about trusting yourself. Treat your car as an extension of yourself, and you'll find everything comes naturally (even better if you drive a stick).

On the other hand, I've driven about 15000 kms this month, and now I'm beginning to get a bit lazy (not concentrating as much on what's around me). I think that's something everyone needs to focus on. If need be, slow down a bit, and look around more. Also, if you can, windows down and listen. Sound tells you a lot too.

Now, as for parking: practice. There really is no substitute. Buy some cones and go into a quiet street or empty lot.

Parking does take a lot of practice. I got really good at reverse parking after working 2 years as a hotel concierge, part of my job was valet parking. All cars had to be reverse parked, and some were very expensive (Porches (including a Carrera twin turbo with 1,400 km on the clock, plus high end Mercs and BMWs to name but a few)

I learnt quickly because I had a decent instructor and because I couldn't afford to do more than 20 hours. I put 100% in my test because I sure as shit couldn't afford a retry anytime soon and I passed first time. My cousin had 30 hours and because her parents are quite well off she wasn't too fussed either way. She ended up taking the test 3 times before passing. (£270) more.

So there is no set time
