it's very good. very very good.

even though it's the b-sides and rough drafts from the years of quaristice and oversteps, the songs are far more complex.

more like autechre's old idm/glitch stuff.

the drop on that is GORGEOUS. so influenced by UK funky and proper dubstep explorations: from ikonika, to joker, to flylo... it's all in there.

you linked me to the single and it was fucking weird, not like his stuff at all.

but yeah now i remember; alex smoke is very good though, as a producer and dj.

loads of the top producers on the scene are of our generation - dubstep and the related genres are 'our' electronic movement. they're 'our' rave, 'our' trance/techno, 'our' IDM... it's the surging and rising-up of a new generation of (bedroom) producers, dj's and critics/reviewers, all interested in a new movement that matches our tastes and era. not surprising that the young-stars are, quite literally, young. mount kimbie are art students in london, james blake is a pretty young fella, too. hell even the big mainstream figureheads like skream, benga, rusko etc. are pretty young-- rusko just graduated from university a year or two before he made it 'big'.

also digging the SHIT out of this producer lately... i deleted a post earlier recommending the 10 leading/pioneering dubstep producers, putting out nothing but 100% quality, driving the scene forward and bringing its REAL kudos back. this guy is one of them, right up there. this track blows my fucking mind. listen to it in proper quality and... well, wow.

i don't make any apologies - this has been my passion and forte for the better part of 10 years now, pretty much all i listen to.

so some of the more experimental or abstract stuff may be a little too opaque or unlistenable to the untrained or untamed ear...

but it sure fucking beats all the over-produced, mainstream (i use the word cynically) shite that most people listen to and consider 'electronic'!

Yeh, I wouldn't expect you to apologise for your tastes, and I know you wouldn't anyway. Some of the stuff isn't unlistenable, it's just I don't "get" it. As you say, you've been doing it for 10 years, I've literally been listening to electronic music for just over 2. Since you posted the Burial tunes though, I listen to everything you post just in case I love it as much as that. Wouldn't have heard of Burial if it wasn't posted here, and I'm seriously liking this Clubroot guys stuff too.

there are some really interesting new 'movements' in electronic lately - and im talking about things more academic and 'unlistenable' than dubstep. these are really good times for the genre and 'scene', as production methods get ever more cheaper and simpler and the scope of possibility literally becomes limitless. whether you're digital, analogue; a producer, a dj; a promoter, researcher or critic... there's so much out there and so much happening nowadays. it's really thriving. im loving some of the more experimental synth-noise / hauntology stuff that's coming out lately... it's a conscious and artistic return to cold, analogue, almost musique-concrete sounds in reaction to the increasingly sterile, calculated and digital productions of the last 10 years. IDM has been teetering on the brink of an ignoble death whilst the rest of the experimental community has caught-up in terms of variation, whackiness and general complexity. lots of very good stuff, indeed.

edit: i was raised on a diet of rave-tapes and rode the original dance/acid/techno waves in the 90's. very lucky to have been exposed to that by family and family friends, oddly enough. my own departure and real development of 'personal taste' probably came at like age 12, when i 'inherited' the entire discography of aphex twin and listened religiously throughout my teenage years. i racked up something like 5k listens to the guy before i even wanted to branch out into anyone else - modern mozart is a fitting epithet. through my teenage years i was the kid that paid attention and got involved in 'cool scenes', as a social-thing, but always maintained a main interest in IDM/electronic/experimental. when electro and dubstep and all these other genres suddenly came to fruition and became 'cool' in indie-underground circles, all of a sudden i was the coolest guy in the world to my friends... despite having my electronic tastes and DJ'ing pretty much neglected throughout school. funny how that works.
