President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev took a break from White House meetings yesterday to visit a popular burger joint.

The two leaders popped into Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Virginia, near Washington - the same restaurant Obama paid a visit to last year with his Vice President Joe Biden.

Obama drank iced tea and Medvedev sipped a Coke - with the pair sharing chips.

I'm being serious here.

Does Obamas attempts at looking like a ''regular joe''' just make him look sorta like a 'lowlife' to anyone but me? I mean: compare the bottom picture of Reagan having a formal dinner with Gorbachev and Obama taking the President of Russia to have cheeseburgers. I know he is trying to be like one of us but it comes off as well you know sorta ghetto. I wouldn't take my girlfriend_{when I had/have one} out to a burger joint on a date why the hell would you take the President of one of most important countries in the world to a burger place?

Am I the only one who wants my President to be more formal, noble, etc.?

I think that if he honestly truly just wants a simple shitty burger from a regular burger shack(As opposed to some gourmet one that his kitchen would cook)
But if he's doing it just to seem like an average joe, like you said, then yeah it's an issue.

I don't think there really is a way to know for sure.

Well, if it was Obama's idea then it's a bit low. However, if Obama was like "Yo Med wana go grab a cheeseburger?" and the guy agreed than I guess it's ok.

It doesn't have to be white table cloth with excellent service, just a nice restaurant. A burger joint can be very nice. Check out Red Robin most of the time as an example.

So I'm waiting for a "In Soviet Russia, ...fill in the blank..." photoshop

I'm pretty sure most of us don't have a security firm along with a horde of media following us along with a Russian President as a dining companion.

Like I said, it's a PR exercise for both leaders. Every politician does it, nothing unusual.

It may have been a PR thing, but it wasn't that long ago that a president would never been seen in public with a Russian president talking it up and "sharing" fries. from the cold war to this in less than 25 years... that's pretty amazing and a good message for the public. A hell of a lot better than air raid sirens and duck and cover psych-ops of the cold war.

Macbeth, much as I'm trying to ignore/be nice to you of late, you've gotta be pretty stupid to miss the fact that this is obviously a PR exercise. You know, recession, lack of money etc, so the President needs to appear to be down with the common man, and part of that means going for a $10 meal with another head of state, rather than a $500 meal in an upscale DC restaurant.

Exactly. If he had some swanky meal I'm sure there'll be people would complain about the cost. Can't please everyone all of the time. Certainly nothing wrong with him going to a burger joint with the Russian President. A bit out of the norm, but again, it's good PR. Those in the upper echelons of power can sometimes be seen as to be in their ivory towers with a holier-than-thou attitude. Something like this is designed to remove that image, or the potential for that image to be pinned. It doesn't matter what side of politics to sit on, this is the fact of the matter.

I know it's a PR move, I said that in the OP. The point is: does the stupid ass PR moves make him look worse to anyone else and wouldn't you want your president to be more dignified, formal, etc.
