I've always used Catalyst drivers partly out of fear of using third party drivers, and partly because they always did what they needed.  However, I've switched over to Omega drivers for my X850 XT x16 and these drivers come packed with some great features.  This was in a large part inspired by problems I had with lighting in Special Forces with Catalyst drivers.  Not only are there tweaks within the drivers themselves to help your performance, but they come with plenty of tools to do whatever you feel necessary.  For example, I'm overclocking my card to perform as a Platinum Edition right now (540/1180 as opposed to stock 520/1080) and the stock HSF is very capable of keeping temperatures low.  I encourage everyone to try out these drivers.

If you've got a dual-slot ATI card (one slot for the fan), I highly recommend overclocking and clicking "auto-fill" under fan settings.  This'll be louder, but my card never breaks 60C and I get a nice performance boost.  I can't say I've gotten much more FPS in BF2, but hell why not OC.

well if it doesn't give you a performance boost you could be harming you gfx card in it's life expectany

Overclocking isn't all it's cracked up to be. Between you and me, if it comes down to an 8% performance gain and 12 more months of operation, I'm going to choose time.

Of course, the Opteron overclocking scheme is perfectly acceptable in my mind.

6207 3DMarks overclocked VS 5927 3DMarks at stock speed.  I'd say it's a decent gain, no?

I used the Omega Drivers.   Got them installed and I had to say that everything on my monitor looked razor sharp.  I went back to Catalyst 6.4 because for some reason everything else for my ATI went wonky.

I might have to experiment more to see what works better.  I couldn't get the tray tools to load.

No 6.4's act like all standard Catalyst Drivers for me.

I have an AIW 2006 Edition and I play BF2 only.  I don't have time for more games.  But then again I only play an hour or two a night.  So......

skratch-x, do you have any problems running Omega drivers with the X850XT? I ran Omega's with my 9800Pro, but when I installed them on my X850XT, my system doesn't recognize the drivers (XP PRO).  Every couple of seconds the "found new hardware" wizard will pop up and ask if I want to install the drivers for the card even though the Omega's are functioning perfectly.  Any ideas?

I can't remember where I found out about them but I have Omega drivers too, they were the only thing that make Far Cry playable on this PC (card is a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis and I only had 1 gig of RAM at the time).

I love that it can switch automatically to accelerated mode when going into a game and then it switches itself back to normal when you quit.

They've run very smoothly for me, besides tray tools having some error where it runs out of system resources and crashes.  I haven't had any hardware detection problem.  As has been recommended, I'd try cleaning your drivers out, and reinstalling them.  Make sure Catalyst Control Center is NOT installed when you install omega.
