GM Recalling 1.5 Million Vehicles for Fire Hazard

Fox News wrote:

General Motors Co. is recalling nearly 1.37 million vehicles because a washer fluid heater module could overheat and cause a fire, the National Highway Safety Administration said Tuesday.

The recall covers the 2006-2009 Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, Hummer H2; 2008-2009 Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS; and 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, Saturn Outlook and the 2009 model year Chevrolet Traverse.

AND...

Chrysler Recalling Nearly 600,000 Vehicles

Fox News wrote:

Fearing the risk of fire, brake failure and sticking accelerator pedals, U.S. automaker Chrysler made a slew of vehicle recalls, U.S. government documents showed Monday.

The Michigan-based firm recalled almost 600,000 vehicles across four models, documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed.

The recall includes 288,968 Jeep Wranglers for faults that could cause friction between an inner fender and tubing, leading to break failure.

A total of 284,831 Dodge Grand Caravans and Chrysler Town & Country models were also recalled because of ill-fitted wiring that poses a fire risk.

Around 25,336 Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass models were also being recalled for problems with a sticking accelerator pedal.

It was just the latest in a raft of recalls from Chrysler and other vehicle manufacturers.

On June 4, Chrysler recalled about 34,700 Dodge Caliber vehicles worldwide over problems with sticky acceleration pedals.

Government Motors at Work

---

You wonder how in bed the media is with the government.  Two of the three US auto makers are announcing recalls this week and you barely hear a blurb about it.  Yet when Toyota had a recall with the SAME problem one the recalls above is having it was all over the news for a month.

BTW, Toyota vehicles are more American than a GM or Chrysler vehicle.

First I've heard of about the Caliber.

The rest, have made the news here. However........

What you did not mention was that there have been no reported fires or failures. I don't think Toyota can say that about their........ problem.
That makes it look like this was found out through routine maintenance checks.

Chrysler says the pedals were made by the same company that made pedals involved in a recall of more than two million Toyotas earlier this year.

Oops, so Chrysler took longer to react than Toyota?
Chrysler says the SUVs have "smart brake" technology allowing the brake to override the accelerator pedal.
Dunno about that.

Yeah... but it's a good reason you don't here about GM as much. Giving negative press to foreign companies and keeping GM's problems hidden supports GM, and the North American economy.

Toyota has many of their cars built in the USA.  These branchplants provide jobs to people, Americans. Also, Toyota must have hired Americans before.

The manner in which these issues came to light is far different.

There were some high-profile media stories about accelerator issues in Toyotas - one involved an off-duty CHP officer and his family dying.  This is the sort of thing that catches media attention, and as the apparent problems mounted and led to a recall, it provided a continuous story to cover for months.

I'm sure the big automakers here started checking out their cars and taking preventative steps in the hopes of avoiding the media fallout that would happen should similar incidents occur.

They're just covering their bases TBH.

(Although they probably do exercise a lot of behind-the-scenes control...)

Toyota America still employs loads of Americans tbh. Companies now are moving towards being more globalized than nationalized, which is a good thing for everybody.

Last week I received a recall notice by Suzuki. All their 199-2004 XL-7 brands were recalled because of a defect with the accelerator cable. Only took like 30 minutes to fix at their shop.

A lot of the reason why the Toyota recall got more press was because they didn't make a recall until people died first.

If you recall before something like that happens, then you're less likely to get press.

It's not a conspiracy, it's just a matter of controversy and sensationalism.

Well, we fuck over the consumer so much nowadays that if it's anything short of bailouts, ecological disasters, health risks, or cartel behavior, then it's just standard business.

Supporting consumer rights is what's more newsworthy these days.
