How to fix D&ST

Realise that its just a site on the inter webs which you can post comments on and not an actual home which you must defend.

Some members need to chill the fuck out.

Some members need to read a post, when its not about them or involves any debate they are interested in, go back to the midget porn and don't post stupid irrelevant insulting shit.

Some members have to accept that. When you are raised in a country different to yours with different values and a different society. People have a totally different outlook on some issues. Ranting, cursing and insulting someone repeatedly is not going to change their entire belief system which has taken their entire life to formulate.

Take lowing as an example. Personally I think he is a right wing war monger who profits directly from military action. But publicly he is concise with his arguments, always curious and never insulting. I respect him for that and respect his point of view but respectfully disagree. What is missing from D&ST is RESPECT. Respects for the site, respect for the users, respect for the mods and most of all...........respect yourself and don't act like a Muppet ffs!

I agree, people shouldn't take anything personally. Maybe there should be a seperate karma system made, "Serious Karma" . People who keep discussions on topic receive debate karma, which only mods should be able to give. Then, people can choose the level of serious karma people need to participate in their topic, and members below the limit can spectate the argument but not take part. The OP can set the SK limit.

Here is a system that they are putting on one of my regular local political sites. Dont know if its possible here. I dont think its needed.
But as an example. The linked site bellow, is a political website based in Northern Ireland. The people who post on it live within spitting distance of eachother. There are ex terrorists and maybe serving terrorists among the posters. People who would have litterly killed eachother if they had the chance only a few years ago. The debate is never anything but respectful. Yes it gets heated but its allways respectful. If people who used to try and actually kill eachother can resectfully debate, why can't we?

"When you write your comment, instead of hitting the Submit Comment button, you will instead be asked to click on a point on this graph that you think best represents the nature of your comment. Remember, no point on this graph is ‘wrong’ – purely adversarial comments with no evidence to back them up can sometimes add to a debate. But such comments are more likely to be problematic – and if Slugger were dominated by them, it would be a bad thing.
Now, once you’ve submitted it, others may have the option to also rank your comment. Our suspicion is that – as long as your own assessment is fair – that they won’t. But if your judgement is wildly wrong (often because you have a different standard of ‘evidence’ to others) they may have the option to also click on the graph and rank your comment.

I like that idea, though maybe tone it down a bit, because some people might abuse this function the first couple of days after it's introduced. No offence to anyone.

Instead of deleting this thread, can it be put as a sticky permanently in feature requests or DST? It would be excellent for DST feedback.

lol  apparently I am to be the DST poster child for all that is wrong and right with this forum. I am always the one being made an example of.  Anyway, I understand what you are saying, and I can agree with you. (uhhh except for the war mongering, profiteering part )

Meh.  You just wear the biggest bulls-eye as many here are way way out in left field.

Now that he called someone else a liar I'm setting the record straight, less than a day after ATG "left his badge on the table" he said he was going to ask for his "badge" back in February (a few months later), and ended up asking for it back less than a week later, at which time chuy banned the account he had approved himself to use, unbanned and demodded the ATG account.

But seriously, on topic or get out. I realize at this point just about everything that is going to be said has been said but I am still thinking about the problem...

Alrite, I'll use clear bullet points...
My suggestions

- Thread titles must relate to the topic
- Users must not adress each other. They must address the others opinion. Aalso, even if someone gives an idiotic response, they shouldn't be reprimanded or tag teamed. Instead, other members should act indifferent towards them, and prove theirpoints wrong.
- No one is allowed to take anything personally. Do not get agitated or offended by another comment, because it probably wasn't made to offend you
- More mod supervision
- Clear, concise arguments
- Some kind of "On-topic Reliability" system members can get
- Ifsomeone repeatedly violates DST regulations, they should be banned from DST until they get a cool down period and change their ways.

Much like in real life, bigger govt. does not solve problems, it magnifies them. There is nothing wrong with this forum as it is, people are gunna be jerks, regardless of your attempts to force them to be nice. If those that get offended by it, get offended, they should find some new "land of make believe" to frequent, one that will put them and their opinions up on a pedestal where apparently they think it belongs.

Nice response. +1

Pace, honestly man and don't take this the wrong way -but you really don't know jack about D&ST.  Assuming this is yer' original account, you've only been here 100 days.  You couldn't know possibly what is wrong (if anything) with this sub forum or how to fix it.  Please leave it alone.

Yeah... but it's not hard to notice all the problems with the arguments. I just point out what I see.

so what is the magic number in this forum when you have earned your opinion, and it become worthy of DST?

Somewhere above 100 days...  Many people have been here years longer than he has and have stated far more than he with far less.  For christ's sake it's like a fucking tv episode of "the nanny" here -on crack -and the internet.

I agree about my forum youngness, DB. However, you can't say I don't state a lot.

http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=136100 This and the RWF thread prove that. Besides, it's fairly obvious the state DST is in. I'm not taking your statement the wrong way, but I insist that you just give my opinions a chance. Then, napalm them! Not the seymoure approach of insulting people according to their member name.

I like the reader feedback mechanism on the sluggerotoole site. Perhaps an "off topic" button, similar to a report button, but instead of requiring the submitter to type up a report, it just generates an autoreport to a mod? They get X OFFTOPIC reports on a given post from multiple readers (prevents tyranny of the minority) and they are cued to go take a look?

That can already be done using the report button, just tap it and write OFFTOPIC ... no lenghty reasons needs to be added ...

Is that allowed? If so, feature requests would be made obsolete. This would let us request fetures without members derailing the threads.

I wouldn't want to see people start spamming the report button. It's nice when debates can be fluid and free to run their course (without turning into repetitive 'no u' wars or flamefests).

Not spamming, just reporting personal attacks and rule breakings. I doubt many people would abuse the report button, abusing it's probably one of the easiest ways to get banned.

We should have a poll of which changes we wish to implement in DST.

Is a poll really necessary??

Just like the subtitle to the forum says, if you can't keep a level head this is not the place for you.

If things get out of hand, moderate it with a reminder that whilst heated debate can be interesting, resorting to insults and being deliberately divisive brings the quality of the content down significantly. If it happens again, warn the user that this is not the way in which to conduct oneself in this forum. After a couple more warnings a temp ban should get the message across.

Really, most people are smart enough to know after a warning or two they're on thin ice and should tone down their posting style, if they're going to engage in any kind of debate, so temp bans should really not be necessary, but maybe a couple examples need to be set to get the message across from time to time.

Really, you can't please everyone no matter what you do so no decision reached in this thread is going to have unanimous praise. Enforcing the already clear and existing rules will be easier and much less confusing, because everyone's aware of them already.
