They are.

Good idea I think. Wouldn't have any impact on me. It'll only affect people who drink horrible shoddy cheap alcohol.

Cheap vodka, crap strong cider and that sort of shit are the things that will be hit hard. Prices for nice drinks won't go up at all.

Pinot what?

I just spent about £600 on Pinot Noir (Bollinger, Gevrey Chambertain, 1er Cru Beaune) and Chardonnay (1er cru Meursaults).

How much is wine in the US in general? I've been considering investigating some of these more interesting sounding American wines.

Jaekus is Australian, i believe.

as for American vintages, across the board they are less than their French counterparts. the burgundies here are very appealing, but not quite as nice or expensive as the French ones. the white wines have more variety because of all the different climates they can grow here. the reislings are very nice, and i've not found many > 15-$20.

America's greatest contribution to the world of alcohol, imho, is bourbon.

If it's 65p per unit, a litre bottle of Smirnoff (which isn't a particularly amazing brand of vodka, but it aint ASDA smartprice) will go up from around £18 to £24. Seeing as vodka is what i drink most of, it's definitely going to affect me. It's also going to make nights out a lot more expensive.

Oh, you have such experience of this sweet life, how can I doubt the wine-taste of someone from the Californian suburbia?

our statements are both subjective. you may not like them, i prefer burgundy over white, but my wife likes white over red. of all the varietals grown in this part of my country, Reisling whites most resemble the vintages from where they came from. Pinot Noirs can be good, but the best vintages are from where they originated. i've had some decent shiraz, but found better ones imported. "Reisling is never nice" is an opinion.  Reislings are too (sweet; light; whatever) is opinion.

yes, though I'll be the first to admit that mine was more subjective than yours. Haven't ever tasted a Riesling I like, though it's pretty popular around here..

Ken's like four hours driving time away from Napa/Sonoma. he can stop in Fresno and pick up some E & J though . . .

is it too sweet? my wife loves them, but i'm done after half a glass. i like Beaujolais or other dark reds - sweet wines i can live without.

Too sweet, yeah. Though I haven't exactly tried a wide range, could be missing out on something - though I doubt it.

To be completely honest, I've had $800 bottles of wine and $2 bottles and I can't taste much of a difference.  But I don't pretend to know what I am talking about.  You are a wannabelite, the type that will drop the name of an expensive bottle in a poor effort to impress....someone.

Ya dig?

Look who just "name-dropped" 5+ wines including price a few posts up.

I merely loosely stated that I don't fancy Riesling (which, btw, is hardly stating my place as a wine conessieur - on the contrary, really), and you jump on my back faster than Spitzer on a fancy hooker.

Fuck off with your hypocrisy.

and i'm dropping a buck and a quarter on a 21 year old bottle of Glenlivet® when i leave work. there, i dropped a name, i dropped the fact that i'm buying single malt Scotch and the fact that it's aged longer than ¾ of the forum. good game, me!

I'm no wine expert.

I can barely tell the difference between one glass and the next.

What I do know is that I prefer white.

I don't drink much alcohol.

But I'm still cooler than you.
