Back to the oil spill. Containment techniques are great, but they really need prevention techniques. Maybe building a special dam-like fence that either filters water that spreads out from the oil rig, or that can be sealed quickly.
They shouldn't had to drill that far off shore to begin with. The complications of drilling a mile down are tremendous. Had we not the ecomentalists around the well would have been in much shallower water and not as hard to contain/fix. Thanks enviroweenies.

But yeah, it's still somewhat true, environmentalists always block things like nuclear power, giant solar farms and wind farms and such that it forces people to do shit like this. Saying that I wonder how true that really is, whether BP would have been able to drill in shallower waters but were denied because of Environmentalists (or Environmental laws, or more precisely spoiling the view for some billionaire)

The brown pelican was until very recently on the endangered species list (lawl, going right back on now) and because of this, near shore drilling was expressly forbidden off the coast of Louisiana and Mississippi. This pushed drilling ever further away from the coast (along with the drilling bans of Alabama and Florida).Mekstizzle wrote:

@ Galt - Florida
While it sucks that it's going to hurt Florida pretty badly, perhaps now is the perfect time for people in the state to move its economy away from relying solely on tourism and building new homes for retirees. Silver lining perhaps.El Beardo wrote:

As a side note, implementing more and better regulation of the oil industry because the world's worst ecological disaster has just occurred due to corporate negligence is NOT overreaction.JohnG@lt wrote:

The mere thought of considering it to be one is something so absurd only a pie-in-the-sky free market economist could posit it.
No, but the thought of a clueless government employee babysitting on a rig is equally absurd.Turquoise wrote:

Planes can always start using more biofuels instead of fossil fuels.

Sure, compound the problem by putting the offshore drilling industry, which Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas depend on for billions in annual revenue, out of business as well.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

kill 'em all
Very good point Mek about rich asshole politicians (e.g. Dead Kennedy) stopping things like wind farms from being built. I think wind turbines look cool, hell they can build one in my backyard.

Anyone who says "aw, wind turbines are an eyesore" should go jump down a cooling tower. Preferably of a coal power station.
No, but seriously. How one can complain that people aren't doing enough to become environmentally friendly then complain about wind turbines...

It's all cool when your saying ya get rid of 90% ill just hang out in the 10% who are stayin...

It will happen again. That is unquestionable. It's all just a matter of frequency (and location).
