So yeah, it doesn't take long for current lead-free paint to wear off parking lots, let alone roadways. Let's hope everyone is extra-careful this year.

I mean I know a couple of those sources talked about a shortage of the ingredient, but I don't understand why there is a shortage.

I'm guessing it's because the big Texas plant run by DCC cranked down their production of and titanium dioxide methyl methacrylate, anticipating an economy and paint usage even lower than they currently are. Or it's possible that there was some technical difficulty. Others say it's because big government regulates MMA production too harshly due to the hazards of long-term exposure, making it harder to produce, but I'm a bit skeptical on that as the only explanation.

Coming from the guy who started the Empathy thread...

Will traffic safety become threadworthy when someone runs your ass over because they can't tell what lane they're in, or do you just not care that even more people are losing their jobs nationwide because it isn't your field? This is a contractor's nightmare, particularly due to the fact that the prime months for outdoor painting are ahead of us.

Glad I stocked the warehouse early.

Lane markings here (Aus) practically disappear when it rains, they just don't get renewed.

The MMA is what gives our highway paint its retroreflective quality. I'm not sure what kind of hippie stuff you use over there, but ours are still visible in the rain (unless it's a bloody flood).

Its more that they're worn out than the quality of the paint (AFAIK).

Ah, well, that we have in common. Since they (understandably) took the lead out of paint, the stuff wears out in a year or two, if not months. Duration also varies from mfg to mfg, weather intensity and the condition of the surface. Budget can be a huge constraint with the $/lft in question. My city only really stripes the main roads.

Personally, I've done mostly parking lots on painting days/nights.
