We don't have oil. We have mobile phones, shipbuilding and forestry.

well why not? That's what we pay taxes for. Maybe you get fuck all for your taxes, I dunno.

You know, all that stuff is what you get when you live in a positive, progressive society. The funny thing is hardly anyone complains about it, even those paying really high taxes, cos it's just part of our social philosophy. I find it kinda hilarious and sad that anyone would bother complaining about some people who are living in poverty are getting 100 dollars extra. To me that's like...wtf is the problem. it's a GOOD thing.
no getting your ass to work and contribute is a good thing, not a bonus for doing nothing. If anyone deserves a bonus, it is those that work more for less.
Or at least earn your welfare by doing jobs for the people, pick up trash alone the highways, apint govt. buildings, landscape etc

That was more directed about Norway.

But remember, you guys have a VERY VERY small population compared to the US...

*A place to stay when I get old?
*Free money aka pension from the government when I stop working at 67?

of course it is. I encourage everyone to work. I don't LIKE it when people don't work and just sit back and get benefits, of course not. I think everyone SHOULD work if they can get a fair wage. But it's a good tihng we have free healthcare, libraries etc etc, obviously, as well as a safety net if things fuck up and you're in poverty or on the breadline or whatever. Would I rather pay 5 per cent more tax and get free education, social safety nets, healthcare etc etc? Fucking right I would, because it's a benefit for me and for society as whole. Again, it seems kinda sad you're moaning like it's a personal affront that some poverty-line family gets 100 dollars extra.

I do think population size helps; easier to direct spending. That's probably why forms of socialism work better (better, not good) in countries like Vietnam and Cuba in contrast to E.g. USSR and PRC.

Then again, with a population of 300 000+, Iceland managed to fuck everything up.

Having a few small dense cities compared to the HUGE land mass of the US, ranging from metropolis' to small towns.

One thing I can give credit to Finland is that they have a really good education system.

Sweden still relies maybe not on oil, but an energy sector that keeps its economy afloat.

If a country is so well built, there wouldn't be need for welfare at all. How many of you Euros love going to America to buy shit that costs half as much?

So what has that to do with balancing a budget?

Is it so much easier to balance a budget for 5 million people than it is to balance a budget for 300 million people?

Doesn't matter if it's 1 or 300.000.000 ... the basics are exactly the same ...

I seem to remember we have about the same amount of immigration numbers ... religion and race? ... how does that influence your ability to balance a budget ...

You may have more illegals but they don't leech on a system their not part of or? ... don't you need a social security number for that?
