I haven't done MATlab (yet), fortran was pretty stupid but you only solve stupid problems with it for the most part. I did some work with it and it wasn't so bad, the character-by-character syntax was fucking gay though.mtb0minime wrote:

IIRC, even doing a simple thing like a factorial was a pain in the butt.

Fortunately we didn't have to program that entire thing ourselves, though we did have to modify a ton of stuff.

Not to get all Uzique on you, but at least reach the upper div courses and use it for real-world practical applications and talk to professors who are also practicing engineers before you criticize it. Besides, you're doing .. mechanical engineering? Maybe they don't use Fortran in that sector, but in Civil it's still practical and useful.

I said that is not an appropriate use for it. Small scale calculations, on a problem that would be a lot better executed with object-oriented design to boot, fortran is an unnecessary pain in the ass.
When I used fortran it was working under a professor in cosmology, they did a lot of floating point calculations dealing with huge models and the least amount of overhead was preferred. But that was stuff that was taking hours to compile, even on today's computers. I really don't think there is a reason besides sadism to be teaching such a language to today's kids.
