A world first from a research institute in America. The biggest leap forward for mankind since the internet. Mark this day in your calendar ladies and gentlemen - just like the transition from vacuum tubes to microchips we'll see an exponential explosion in our ability to harness this technoologic development. The world will be a very different place in 200 years time. Hats off to the J Craig Venter Institute!

As awesome as that would be to watch it would never happen since some people beleive in sanctity of life or something like that.

Now, the scientists have put both methods together, to create what they call a "synthetic cell", although only its genome is truly synthetic.
I just wanted to point this out, because I thought from the OP that they made the actual cell itself. That was what I was going to be most impressed by, because otherwise this is an obvious extension of processes already in place...and a relatively ineffective one at that compared to "editing" DNA from other bacteria, at least for now.

Anyways very cool.

It's a world first nonetheless - cell multiplication with artifical, human designed genetic material.

yeah, i saw that too.  not "pure" synthetic life, but it looks like they are well on their way.

But see we have been editing genetic material to do exactly what we want for some time. It said this later:

"But, he said, "there is already a wealth of simple, cheap, powerful and mature techniques for genetically engineering a range of organisms. Therefore, for the time being, this approach is unlikely to supplant existing methods for genetic engineering". "

That is all I'm saying.

It would be awesome if we could create some Griffins and release them in Africa or South America.

It's not human designed, it's human replicated. Or something. They copied an existing form of bacteria, used some crazy automaton to synthesise the genome or something and then inserted it into an existing blank cell. So really, that machine they used is the real hero. It can create genomes.

The researchers copied an existing bacterial genome. They sequenced its genetic code and then used "synthesis machines" to chemically construct a copy.

I think I will go on chain smoking and doing dangerous things for a living so I dont have to see this fucked up future. I was hoping for a way to cross the vast expanses of space instead of people playing God.

A lung created from science. Smoke away.

Science that is years away from perfection aside, I advise the scientific community aside I advise the scientific community to drop this, like that big collider thing. Quantum mechanics are interesting but not worth a multi-billion dollar black hole.
