Only required on entry to the country, or if you're not a citizen - in which case you'll need them to set up bank accounts etc.

See, we police our borders, can't understand why neither the Republicans or Democrats are remotely interested TBH.

I would have joined the SS just for the uniform.
I think I read somewhere that Hugo Boss designed their uniforms.

The point is we don't need to carry papers, even the rare time we're supposed to its a trivial issue if we don't.
Giving a false name is a more serious offence than not carrying ID, so people tend not to do it.

For the Police its a few seconds effort on his radio thingy 'ID check Dilbert_X DOB XX-XX-XXXX, OK thanks, on your way sir'.
Which they would most likely do anyway if you show ID given how easy it is to forge an ID so why bother with ID at all.
you are not addessing the point. The point is you are saying cops have no business asking people for ID, even if they are suspected in a crime.

There is little different between asking someone for papers, or varifying their ID over a fuckin' radio. The act is the same.

Your argumment is the cops do not have the authority to check you out...Are you standing by that?

cops in arizona cant just ask someone for papers walking down the street.  you guys need to read the bill tbh.
That's just weird man. I'm glad I don't live in a police state. I've never EVER been asked for ID on street in Australia, or ever, ever met anyone who has, and I've got quite a lot of friends from o/s or have lineage that's non anglo-saxon/celtic/european. The thought is simply unthinkable here.

The question was whether people are required to carry ID, I never said the Police can't check us out.

If we believe the police have no lawful reason to be stopping us and asking for our details we are free to tell them to go fuck themselves - stopping a member of the public without lawful excuse is harassment - but you have to be sure of your ground and its easy for the police to make something up.

So:

We don't have to carry ID.
We don't have to identify ourselves or answer any questions if we choose not to. Its up to the police to prove we've committed a crime and not for us to prove we haven't - unlike america.

I thought we were talking about nazis.
The reason most of europe rejects ID cards is the nazi connotations, doesn't seem to bother the US though.

Carrying papers or not is not the real issue, a means to prove your identity is.

bullshit, a cop called to a scene is going to interview those at the scene, to determain if a crime has been committed. Stop acting as if the Aussie police have no authority over the citizens, and that they are not allowed to investigate or check the ID of people they suspect might be relevant to his investigation.

It is the same here, a cop with a reason to talk to you has the right to ask you for ID, there is no difference. By the way, yet again, you all seem to be avoiding the FACT that AZ law is nothing more than enforcing the federal law that is already on the books. You must provide ID.

But we're not talking about crime scenes, we're talking about the Police questioning people they think might be immigrants for that reason alone.
You're worse than my mum, and she watches the 'Crime Channel' all day.

Well from where I picked up the discussion from the question was asked if here in Aus we need to carry ID around at all times. The answer is, and has always been, no.
