As for Uzique's isolationist policy, I agree, however you got to keep the defense exports strong so you can ramp up production easily when Britain does get involved in a war.

He'll have the Falklands to fight in soon enough.
Or another tour in Afghanistan (apparently an "illegal" war, according to Uzique...lol).
Another Prince Andrew, but with cooler helicopters.

I very much doubt he got to within 20 miles of action, he would have been surrounded by teams of SAS and Gurkhas.

This thread inspired me to write an AH-64 Apache guide. Lol.
Though, Harry probably deserved to fly one. They dont just put anyone in the Apache's, not even a Prince. People are usually stuck in the Lynx. He's probably earned it, and can probably fly well.

I think a well equipped army is worth having, money spent gets recycled through companies back into the economy, and sometimes we can sell the eqpt developed to other countries.Uzique wrote:

36,702,000,000 in 2010/2011 budget
by the way the entire 'social protection' system (which involves a lot more than welfare) costs ~£150 billion.
so we're really at that much of a risk of invasion that we need to spend such a high proportion? an extra 40 billion on top of the current social spending, or education, or health-service, could go a long way.

i would point out that the majority of technological and scientific research comes from the military or is militarily funded

that 36 billion will be for the next 8 years, its costing us 100 billion for the next 20 years.Uzique wrote:

You are correct, that 600 billion figure was off, that was from some break down i saw a few weeks ago on ITV news. Which i think might actually have been 300 billion, comprised of the first 3 categories from the site below. So on that I was wrong.
Here are the actual figures:
http://www.ukpublicspending.co.uk/gover … iture.html
Welfare is 105 billion a year, defence is 43 billion, i know which I would rather stays the same. As you can see as well an extra 40 billion would go fuck all. its a twelfth of national spending, and it employs hundreds of thousands of our citizens, lots of who would otherwise probably be doing nothing on welfare.
A military keeps people employed, keeps the technology and manufacturing part of the economy ticking over, enables exports and maintains a strategic reserve if needed - unlikely though it is.
Also enables humanitarian work when required, and means the UK is relevant in world politics.
I'd rather see Damian Shellsuit kept busy learning new skills, travelling, gaining world experience and keeping his nose clean lest his sergeant kick the crap out of him than standing on a street corner with a pit bull and a wad of dole in his pocket.

Welfare is a self-digging pit, the more money you throw in the deeper it gets.
Social welfare is important but it needs to be kept in check.
I'm not saying its the solution for every chav or all social ills, its just part of it.
