I didn't see the actual shooting so the dog could have attacked the officer for all we know.

Even if it was just a corgi, the police would still have the right to shoot it if it attacked. Furthermore, just going by the video and a blog post we really don't know the complete circumstances of them shooting the dog.

It would have been better if they were all " hut two three four..." as they kicked in the door and terrorized the family. The dad should have known to buy his drugs from an official government approved mexican cartel.

Pitbulls are often pretty fucked up.  They're even known to turn on their owners.

Have the right, surely, but do you really want to put in the report later "broke into house, shot small dog". You'd just get laughed at.

I've heard of cops shooting dachshunds, AKA wiener dogs. Anyone who's ever owned a doxie knows they're sweet little critters who would certainly not pose a threat to a fucking police officer.

I understand that a lot of this is 'heat of the moment' and that they'd rather not risk getting bitten and getting an infection, but stuff like this really does make me lose respect for cops. I know not all of them are like this, but there is some sort of culture that makes this stuff acceptable. If cops and PDs required more judgment before shooting a dog, then things like this would probably be far more rare.

Something like this happened in Maryland a few years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berwyn_Heights_drug_raid

I mean christ they sent a fucking SWAT team to pick up weed. If they were really interested in stopping drug usage they would have intercepted the package as soon as it was found. Instead they let it get to the recipient. And it turned out that the recipient didn't even buy the drugs. His family was just caught up in it. By the way, this recipient was the mayor of the fucking city.

End the drug war.

While it seems like the child endangerment change is bullplop, I wouldn't say much else is wrong with what is presented. Can't say the author of that post is too impartial either as he writes "This is the blunt-end result of all the war imagery and militaristic rhetoric politicians have been spewing for the last 30 years—cops dressed like soldiers, barreling through the front door middle of the night, slaughtering the family pets, filling the house with bullets in the presence of children, then having the audacity to charge the parents with endangering their own kid" to make it seem as the police are sadistic bastards whereas much of what he describes, e.g. the dressing like soldiers, mid-night raid, shooting of dogs is done for the protection of the officers in the case that it isn't just one guy with some drugs. I did like how he then described them as "fillling the house with bullets" though---nice use of imagery for his rhetoric. Then again, it seems outrageous because most people act like drug laws are some sort of joke.

do the crime... get your dog shot?

having a little bit of pot in your house DOES NOT warrant with ANY REASONABLE APPLICATION OF FORCE the RAIDING of your property by a FULLY ARMED swat-team, whilst your CHILD is in the same house. LET ALONE WITH LIVE ROUNDS GOING OFF.

jesus christ... what next?

get caught taking non-prescribed ritalin and face the guillotine? fucking retarded notion of 'justice' and 'lawful force'.

you know, it amazes me how much americans hate when 'the state' or the 'big man' or the feds over-stretch their boundaries. americans hate having their 'liberty' and 'freedom' taken away or infringed upon in any way by the government or state. so why are you so blithely accepting of federal law enforcement agencies smashing their way into your house? surely, by the libertarian and 'land of the free' concept, you guys should be fine with a guy having a little bit of pot to smoke in his own house. classical, english utilitarianism, right? the greater good for the greater number? not doing any harm to anyone else? but no... you get all christian and vindictive and shit because a guy was caught with a little bit of herb and had a fucking fully-automatic home-invasion drop on his ass. idiot hypocrits, all of you. hypocrite lecteurs!

Well, if drug dealers weren't known to arm themselves then perhaps cops wouldn't go in all SWAT-like.

yeah learn to read the OP for once before you wage in with your usual ideological bullshit.

they found a 'small quantity'. enough for a 'misdemenour' charge. he's not going down for supply offences now, is he?

it's the equivalent of having a SWAT van roll up outside your house with mp5's and a battering ram because you bought a gram of coke from a dealer downtown. i bet the police operation cost 100x more than the street-worth of the spliff or two that the poor guy bought. "your tax dollars at work". your ridiculous notions of liberty and american ideology stretched to the fucking limit.

Yeah, a completely one-sided story with no background as to why the police would be raiding his home. Could it be that he was a major dealer and just happened to have sold out at the time? Since it's Missouri, odds are the guy was running a meth lab at some point.

right, yeah.

all im saying is it's reasonable that they would have done some research on the property if they had taken out narcotics/search warrants. those things need signing-off. they take some level of time and bureaucracy. they arrange a SWAT raid. bust in on a house. and find... nothing. police incompetence at best. total fucking mistake with unlawful use of force at worst. a fuck-up.

How is it incompetence? They found drugs. You just don't think it's a reasonable amount of effort or force because you don't mind a bit o' weed in the house.

it has nothing to do with my stance on drugs in the house. i don't think letting off live rounds in a family home is acceptable for a 'find' with a total net-value of probably $20 bucks. the ammunition was probably worth more. it's a joke. it's a waste of tax money. it's an excercise in nothing but police over-reaction. is this how the "war on drugs" is fought in america? take out the end-users? imprison the hordes of small-time, casual users? no wonder you have such high adult incarceration rates. the fact of the matter is that your law enforcement agencies don't even want to follow the money trail: they're happy busting into little guy's houses and ruining their fucking lives. why dont they follow the paper-trail? it probably goes through the corrution of your own state officials. you guys do nothing about your neighbouring countries that ship the drugs. the war on drugs in america is a fucking farce, in my honest opinion, and i hope all of you enjoy being socialist taxpayers so that dumb police grunts with inferiority complexes can go around shooting corgis for a sense of self-satisfaction and moral 'right'.
