Have you considered care work? I'd suggest with children rather than adults (adult care work can be heart breaking at times, more than I could ever handle anyway), I shit you not, it'll be the most rewarding job you could ever imagine, if nothing else you see every single day that no matter how bad you think things might be, there's always people worse off than you, plus I can't actually put into words the amount of satisfaction you get from just spending each day making someones life a little better.
The down side is, it'll take a few years to get the relevant qualifications, but even you cant say doing a carers course is beyond you, thousands of people do it every year, sure it's not amazingly paid, but trust me when I say this, money is not everything, you've said it yourself, when you get the things you want, you don't really value them anyway, the good in life is what you do, not what you own or how much cash you can throw in the bank.
