well Louisiana is quite fucked apparently. It is clear that the blame for this disaster lies with BP. They lobbied against stronger safety controls for oil drilling which are in place in other countries like norway and Brazil. Their desire for profits has now fucked up the environment, created maybe a worse catastrophe than Exxon Valdez and they should pay. Extremely stringent safety legislation should be implemented.

Of course this is also an inadvertent effect of our dependence on oil.

If it can be proven that BP were negligent with their safety controls, they're going to be liable for a fuckload of damages. Surely someone's gotta be accountable for this.

let's talk about blame/name/shame AFTER the spill is cleaned, the cap is plugged, the relief well drilled and the investigation finished.

k?

Yea, let's fix the problem first before we start assigning blame in public.

Does anyone know why the damn oil rig blew up, killed 11 people and sunk in the first place? Everyone is just talking about this oil spill, which hasn't killed anyone or actually done much harm relatively speaking

but there's nothing about the oil rig exploding and killing people itself...

Yes, the oil spill hasn't harmed anything - only destroying entire ecosystems and the industries that rely on their preservation.

Is there a way to salvage this oil and make profits?

Notice the use of the present continuous verb tense.

I don't think they have found the cause, but it's not true there wasn't anything written about the explosion. There was loads iirc.

Plus the oil spill looks to be one of the world's worst environmental disasters so it should be reported shouldn't it?

Yeah they're building a giant metal dome that they can use to capture the oil as it leaks and pump it to ships at the surface but it'll be a fair few weeks until its finished.

not with all the crap - water/salts/bioorganisms - that are in it now. (i assume you mean the oil in the water)

$20 says BP gets the Exxon treatment after this and they end up paying practically nothing in fines.

Relative to being potentially worse than the Exxon Valdez oil spill?

BP was just the lease holder. The well was being drilled by Transocean, a Swiss company with a pretty damn good safety record.

SWAT teams have been deployed on rigs in the Gulf of Mexico now... so perhaps foul play/terrorism. But, they say the same thing whenever a plane crashes now too.

Exxon paid billions of dollars for the cleanup and to settle civil lawsuits. Should they fine you when you get into a car accident?

Well, depending on the outcome of the car accident and some other things, they can fuck you up, give fines and such if they see fit

Sure, if you ran a red light and caused the accident. If your car breaks down in the middle of the highway and you get rear ended because of it, you won't get fined.

Ok cheers, I wasn't aware.
So who would be accountable, in your opinion? Cause now I have no idea.

Seems perfectly in line with what a group like ELF would do...
