Trust me, I agree. I was never much of a studier in HS to begin with so I feel like I'm going to be in for a rude awakening on September 8th. I don't plan on having to resort to any drugs or coffee/red bull. I'll still drink red bull because I like the taste (don't ask why), I just probably won't be using it for studying.mtb0minime wrote:
To be perfectly honest, I scoff at the kids who need Red Bull and whatnot, as well. So I'm not segregating or giving any preferential treatment. College isn't necessarily about learning that specific material, it's about learning how to learn, and a lot of these people don't get it. Using drugs as a crutch and placebo to pseudo-learn doesn't help at all.Poseidon wrote:
I get that adderall is worse. But they are both psychostimulants that people use to focus or stay awake. If you're going to be criticize people for using one, you should really follow suit with people who require coffee to function.mtb0minime wrote:
That's the difference between Adderall and caffeine. Yes, caffeine can be slightly addictive, and you can even experience withdrawal when quitting it completely, but it's not nearly in the same magnitude as the drugs mentioned in the OP.
America really does run on Dunkin'.
Personally, I don't drink coffee because I hate the taste, and though I do drink soda, I don't require caffeine to function (and actually prefer not drinking any the night before a big test or while I'm working on homework or a project; sometimes I can get all wired/jittery, and it really doesn't help me focus, just winds up making me more distracted).
Honestly, at this point if I need more energy I go to the gym. Always helps the next day, even if I'm sore. I get a free gym membership with my dorm too, so that'll help.
Fix'd metaphor. Now go.Poseidon wrote:

At some point these kids need to learn to work solidly over months, not party and then drug themselves for the few days before an exam.mtb0minime wrote:
What's worse is that most of these kids doing it are of the more "useless" majors. All the business majors, art history, literature, etc. It's kind of sad that they think it's insanely difficult and requires that they take those kinds of drugs to do well, or at least pass. Then again, the memorizing and regurgitating are the only majors it works for. When you actually need to learn theories, learn to apply information, or most importantly, learn how to learn: an all-nighter with a cocktail of Red Bull and Adderall is not going to help you at all. Not surprisingly, these are the same kids who drink until their livers shut down and need to be rushed to the hospital and have their stomachs pumped... every weekend.
I didn't work it out until my Masters, which coincided with my depression clearing.

ok posi........why arent kids just drinking pepsi then? ya thats right.
Exactly. It's about trial-and-error, learning how to learn, finding what works and work doesn't. With the prescription-crazed parents raising their kids via medication, these kids are in the completely wrong mindset:Dilbert_X wrote:

"Damn I failed that test. Guess I need to up the dosage!"
"Wow I got a C after increasing the dosage by 100mg, so that means if I increase it by 1000mg and then multiply by 5, I'll be getting straight A's! Woo hoo!"
Must admit I can't really function without caffeine......

protip: introduce adderall junkies to meth, never worry about them screwing up the curve in your classes ever again

Haven't I been over this already? I understand that adderall is worse. I understand that adderall gives you a much higher kick than coffee or anything else with caffeine in it. But to criticize people who rely on adderall and not criticize people who rely on coffee/other forms of caffeine is hypocritical.11 Bravo wrote:

But not really. One of them is much more potent and has larger effects with smaller doses.Poseidon wrote:

Is criticizing someone who drinks a handle of vodka after work every day but not criticizing someone who drinks 1 beer after work every day hypocritical?
Ah, but the question is do they rely on that 1 beer?mtb0minime wrote:

That, my friend, is apples and oranges.
The guy who drinks the one beer needs it to de-stress after a tough long day at work.Poseidon wrote:

Ok, so now they're both alcoholics.
One of them requires a smaller dosage of less potency to achieve the same results as someone who requires a larger, life-threatening dosage.
Still hypocritical to criticize the one-handle-a-day-drinker and not the one-a-day-beer-drinker?
sorry dude, coffee and something that needs a lab and chemicals to create cant even be in the same discussion.
Is Adderall life threatening? Legit question. Obviously if you take too much, yes... but is it really life threatening?mtb0minime wrote:

I'm not aware of the direct definition of what an alcoholic is, but yes, I'd imagine if you need alcohol - no matter what the amount - to function, you're an alcoholic. You might not be on the same level as the person who needs the handle, but you're in the same category. Just as someone who needs coffee to study is in the same category as someone who needs adderall to study.Ok, so now they're both alcoholics.
They aren't "smart drugs" they are drugs that make you focus. That wording annoys me greatly.
annoys me greatly

Yes, I will criticize someone who needs their daily coffee to function. But I will take my criticism to a higher degree for someone who needs to pop a few pills to do their homework each night.
