Because like it or not, the iPad does it better. Once Apple throws in multi tasking and it turns out to be as good as Android, the iPad suddenly has potential. The battery life is quite good, the hardware is bang on (I don't like Apple, but they do make great hardware) and the software is also very well written.

So if you shelled out the $120 extra it will cost to get a 3G modem in your iPad (which costs about the same as the subsidized modem from 3 in the UK), the iPad modem will probably be faster than whatever extra modem you would have to buy for your car and then divide the connection across the wifi network within the car. So if you're on a road trip with more than one person wanting a connection, your speed will suffer and 3G modems don't have the best ping. I'd personally rather have the built-in 3G modem for speed's sake and then couple that with the 4.0 OS's new (if you want to call it that) multitasking, you could probably set up navigation with Internet browsing/media so that the passenger(s) can play with the iPad and the nav system will interrupt and tell you your turn is coming up.
